RE: Increasing mileage when towing

I can make a 350 mile trip quicker at about 62mph than 68mph because I only need one fuel stop, not two. Or is it two not three? :) Anyway, it's one less stop. Darn trailer sucks the fuel, especially at speed.

RE: New HTT Owner

Our daughter spent 4 years at Gettysburg College so we had our camper at Battlefield KOA (in Gettysburg) several weekends every year. Great spot and the nicest campground in the area.

RE: When selling...

1. Put your trailer in showroom condition, just like you got it from the dealer. Scrub and polish inside and out. Spot paint the rust spots on the frame and wheels. Empty and clean all the cabinets and drawers. Have the refrigerator spotless and running. Remove anything the least personal. Nobody wants your old sewer hose. I'm not sure you do either! :)
2. Have the trailer setup when showing to potential buyers. Make sure everything works. Do any and all repairs before showing it. Do NOT demonstrate how to setup the trailer unless they're holding cash. Do not try to teach them how to camp. You may want to do both after you're holding their cash and they have the title.
Anything in or on the trailer is part of the sale.

RE: ROOF VENT SCREEN REPLACEMENT ?

My screen is removable. Sure to be a replacement part available at an RV dealer. These are not unique to hybrids or brand names.
We have covers over our roof vents. No way anything less than a wolverine is gonna get to the screen, certainly not a house cat or raccoon. But in the desert where you live I doubt you need them to keep rain out with the vents open and may not have even seen them... ;)

RE: Fridge

Most RV refridgerators have a small slide mechanism that will lock your doors in a slightly open position to allow ventilation while not in use (cooling). Most? Some? Gotta admit I've not seen this on either of my RV refrigerators. Am I missing something? (Could be!)

RE: Tyvek cover for 23ss

Putting the cover on the first time is easy if you read the instructions. It's folded/rolled for easy installation. Do not even take it out of the bag or untie it (I forget how it's packed) until you have it up on the roof.
Note the body of the Roo 23SS is about 18' long, no more than 20 feet. Certainly not 23 feet. (Count the 4'x8' ceiling panels. Should be 4-1/2 of 'em. Don't get a giant cover.

RE: Jeep Wrangler and towing HTT? Help please...

You've been conned. Especially by the RV dealer.
The Wrangler's transmission and drive train are at risk here.
This trailer has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 3500 pounds. That's the maximum permissible weight on the road. I'll be surprised if you can keep it under that weight as it's probably 3200 pounds in your driveway.
Not sure what engine in in the Wrangler, but it's gonna be working very hard.
I'd want 4500 pounds towing capacity or more. There may be a way to increase yours.

RE: best place to advertise to sell

Craig's List with lots of photos.
You'll probably get few or no phone calls because you priced it too high! ;) Trying to "get out of it what you have in it" is a months long exercise in frustration.
If you get lots of phone calls you priced it too low, but it will sell!

RE: Hitch for new to us HTT

Chevy Venture has a maximum towing capacity of 3500 pounds. But only if empty and only if the minivan has the factory towing option.
This thing is well past warranty as well.

RE: Hitch for new to us HTT

Based on the advertising I like it!
But I don't like the clamp-on frame bracket since they note there's 2000 pounds of forward pressure on the brackets. I'd think the brackets will slip forward unless thru-bolted onto the frame.
Certainly is a clean looking installation as well. Hopefully the chains are marine quality and won't rust! My Equalizer is a beast and greasy. This one needs no grease.

RE: Before I totally lose hope (re: weights explanations?)

Using the GVWR for the camper is all the data you have until you actually weigh the camper fully loaded.
My quick rule of thumb for the minimum towing capacity needed to tow a specific trailer is the 1000 Pound Rule. 3d grade math that even I can do without a calculator or weighing everything I put in the truck. Trailer weight plus 1000 pounds is the minimum towing capacity. Conversely you can simply subtract 1000 pounds from the vehicles towing capacity and don't tow a trailer weighing more than that.
In the case of a 6000 pound rated tow vehicle I'd absolutely limit the trailer to 5000 pounds.
But... The 1000 Pound Rule is not a "happy towing" rule, it's a minimum rule. For Happy Towing you should use the similar One Ton Rule -- yep, 2000 pounds.
I bought both my tow vehicles this way. I specifically bought a 5500 pound max rated Explorer to tow our 3500 pound popup. When buying our 5000 pound Roo 23SS I wanted 7000 pounds maximum towing capacity. Standard Expedition rating is 6000 pounds but the $350 HD towing option kicked it up to 9000 pounds. Wonderful combination with the 6-speed transmission that's optimized for towing.
Daily driver? The Tahoe hybrid is rated at 22 mpg highway; the Expedition is rated at 20. Less than $200/year in additional fuel costs by my calculations (based on 12,000 miles per year).

The mattress is totally inside the trailer with the bed door closed, should be no interference regardless of the mattress thickness. Tentage in the way?

RE: 3 slide out beds vs. 2 plus fold downs

I was afraid (but not surprised) this was going to happen! Cart (camper) before the horse (tow vehicle). This an all too familiar discussion here.
Hybrid towing is the realm of pickups and real SUVs. The realm of V8 engines. Minivans are totally unsuited to this task. Two beds vs three beds is a conversation to have after you determine what your maximum towing capacity is. Subtract 1000 pounds from that number to get the maximum weight of the trailer (loaded) you can safely tow. To be sure I can tow my trailer with my lawn tractor but it's neither safe nor will the tractor survive very long.
Lets be generous and say a minivan has a maximum towing capacity of 3800 pounds. To avoid the lawn tractor scenario you should not tow a trailer weighing more than 2800 pounds. This is the small popup weight range, not hybrid.
As you can see, this comes up daily. Click for another thread on this same issue.

RE: Mountable Grill

I'm sure there are "mixed reviews!" I thought they were stupid :) and tried to get the option deleted from my new trailer order (a few years ago). Came anyway and I figured I might as well try the stupid grill and throw it away at the end of the season -- if it survived that long.
The simple little grill turned out to be quite nice. Starting her 8th season and used every trip.
Camco Stainless Grill is what I'd buy it I didn't have one already.

RE: Jayco x23f-new owner

1. The toilet is one of the main features of these campers. And it takes some management but is workable. 0200 on a stormy night the bathroom will get use! Plenty of data here on how easy it is. Basic rule is don't put anything blue in the tank (unless you want it to stink). Odorlos(tm) and an enzyme manage ours nearly effortlessly. Only need to dump when nearly full. Barker 4-wheel 16 gallon tote is what I've been using for years. 32 gallon would be better in many respects but is a PITA to carry around, even in a pickup.
2. Small electric heaters only put out a small amount of heat. A 1500 watt heater and 1500 watt hair dryer put out the same amount of heat. We use a 1500 watt heater to supplement the LP furnace when it gets cold. Note the entire electrical system on these trailers only handles about 3,600 watts so a heater will suck up nearly half your capacity. Water heater uses nearly all the rest if run on electricity. Reheat your coffee in the microwave with these two running and everything shuts down! ;)
