RE: BACKING SUGGESTIONS

DH & I discoverd cell phones for backing and it works great. He is very good at backing. Not me. I get very anxious, especially if someone is watching. Once the tears start, I'm done. I can't help it. I can make a beautiful quilt, can homemade soup, plant a garden, birth big babies, pick lice, give a nearly painless shot, and save a 2-lb premie. Backing up a trailer is NOT one of my skills.:R If I am towing on my own I either get a pull-through or get someone else to back it in. I have never had anyone treat me badly for asking.

RE: Hello out there...

What's your tow vehicle? That will probably determine the TT you buy.

RE: what if?

I expect we will still use the TT. Maybe not a long cross-country trip, but we'd definitely camp here in Georgia and maybe go down to Florida. No different from planning any other vacation. We'd just have to put the cost of gas into the budget.

RE: what low temps can you camp in???

Wow, y'all are some hard core winter campers! I am a 2nd generation Welsh-American--I'm not genetically equipped for all that cold weather.:W I think the coldest we've ever camped was 28 degrees (in a tent) and that was just miserable. In the TT we can go a little lower, but then I have to worry about the water hoses and tank.

RE: Poll: do you own a TT and a Pop Up.?

We recently sold our big Niagara pop-up and bought a 25ft TT. I don't regret it at all! The set-up was much more time & energy consuming with the Pop-up. Now that we have the TT we find it much easier to just pick up and go camping for a weekend. We'll never go back!

RE: Help

My DH once put a down payment on a HOUSE without discussing it with me. We had been looking at homes. I liked one, he liked the other. He put money on the house he liked. Unfortunately, it was a done deal and I had to just suck it up. :M Not only that, but I had to work full time to help pay for it! It very nearly caused a divorce! We unloaded that house 15 months later and DH learned a very good lesson--If you want a happy life, don't go against your wife.

RE: Am I the only one who thinks about ...

Camping every weekend? Seems like Memorial Day Weekend can not get here fast enough. Think about it? Heck, I DREAM about camping at least 2-3 nights a week. I recently went through an extended period of insomnia where I was waking up 10-15 times a night. I stopped dreaming almost entirely. My doctor thought I was nuts when I went in and told her that the most disturbing part was that I wasn't dreaming about camping anymore.:R She adjusted my meds and the camping dreams resumed.Even when I'm not camping, I'm camping!

RE: Walmart parking lot stays - need advice please

We have stayed in Walmart and Sam's lots many times. Safety doesn't seem to be the issue, keeping 4 kids happy cooped up in a RV would be. They are convenient, nice to swing in and top off the groceries, save your black water tank, etc. That said, they are also sometimes noisy and very lighted at night, sometimes making sleep difficult. If money is not the issue, with four kids, I would look for a campground with amenities. Stop early enough in the day to get a CG, I suspect the kids will be ready to anyway. You can always find a Walmart as a last resort. I totally agree with this. When we took our 2 kids cross-country, we quickly discounted staying at Flying Js and Walmarts. Why? Because after driving 6-8 hours straight i wanted them to be able to get out of the SUV and run around SAFELY. Maybe even jump in a pool or lake for an hour. And sleep without A/C? *shudder* We stayed in some state parks, a few national parks, and some KOAs and other private parks. Only once did I think we could have done better staying at a Walmart. :) Butte,MT. Now that it's just me and the hubby, I'd probably try Walmart or Flying J. But not with kids and definitely NOT in the summer out west!

RE: North Georgia Mountains

The road up to Black Rock Mountain is quite steep. And there are only two or three campsites that will fit a large trailer. Good for popups, Scamps and such. Holy cow! You said mouthful. My DSis and I went up Black Mountain Rd to get to the Foxfire Museum which is near the SP. We had the idea that we might bring my TT up there. NOT! The road is narrow, with many switchbacks and VERY few guardrails. I have to tell you, my heart was in my throat a couple times. We will NOT be towing our 25ft TT up that road!

RE: North Georgia Mountains

We stayed at Trackrock in Blairsville Ga. Nice and quiet full hookups ...no cable or satellite. About 40 minutes from Helen ga, nice town german flavor lots of tubing available. Trackrock CG is hands-down our favorite campground in Georgia. It's quiet, peaceful, clean, family oriented. They have horseback riding, hayrides on Sat night, playgrounds, a large pond for fishing and swimming, hiking trails. The sites are large and shady. What's not to like?

RE: Give me some travel trailer ideas!

My advice is to buy the unit that will serve your needs *now*, not what you project for the next 4 years. Buy the one that will suit 80% of your needs. Starting small is a good thing, IMO. Our last pop-up was a Fleetwood Niagara, about 27-ft when fully popped out. We loved that thing. It was huge inside--we could easily sleep 7-8. And it had more counter space than I had in my home kitchen! We stored it at home, rather than have to pay storage feed, and we could easily pull it with our Ford Expedition. We got about 14mpg towing the PUP. Well, the kids grew up so we sold the PUP in January. Due to our ages and physical limitations *now* we went with a 25ft TT this time. Upgraded our TV to a Ford f250(3/4 ton). We dont' have near as much space as the PUP--the TT is truly a 2 person unit. But it suits our needs *now*. Looking forward to hearing about the one you decide on!

RE: Did you settle or ?

did you settle on a 'good but not exactly' what you wanted camper because of wonderful sale/price, etc. or did you hold out for that elusive model/floorplan you loved but could not find? :) local rv dealer having a great sale this weekend. model 'close' to what I am looking for is there and a great price. BUT it is not exactly what I want and the upholstery/leather couch etc. is not exactly to my taste, BUT I could live with it, but do I want too? Just curious if the camper you have now is exactly the one you were hoping to buy from the start? We knew what we wanted & needed and we waited until it presented itself. I won't lie, we were sorely tempted by two other units that would have been "okay", but I'm glad we held out. We found the exact unit we wanted about 50 miles from home. Drove over there one morning, dropped the PUP, wrote a check, picked up the Dutchmen and drove home. And we couldn't be happier with our new TT! To me, it wasn't much a matter of the cost. I knew what we needed and was willing to pay, within reason, what it would cost. I'm sure there are people who would think we made a good deal and others who would say we didn't. All that matters to me is that we are deliriously happy with our choice, so that *makes* it a good deal to me. Best of luck to you.

RE: New To Forum and RVs

I wouldn't worry too much about not having a slide. We have had 2 pop-ups(1 w/slide) and 3 TTs(1 w/super slide) and our current 25-ft TT does not have a slide. We found that the slide added more weight than we were comfortable with. I wouldn't want to live full-time in my little trailer, but it is perfect for the kind of camping we do(mostly up to the lake, or a week at the beach.) Plus, I can put it into just about any camping spot. The smallness of the trailer encourages us to be outside most of the time but we do not find it to be claustrophobic, even when we're stuck indoors. Welcome to the club!:B

RE: Camping on I-20 East between Atlanta & Augusta?

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm not a huge fan of Stone Mountain park, anyway(overblown tourist trap, IMO.) I think Hard Labor Creek will be close enough. We don't have to be right in Conyers, just wanted to be within about 30 min. It sounds like it would fit the bill. :C

RE: Random questions - Cash or finance travel trailer

I think one of the negative things about financing an RV is the subtle pull of the bigger and better unit. It's incredibly easy to get sucked in to a unit that is higher priced than you probably should go. $25,000 sounds like a lot of money, but $180/month for the next 15 years sounds a lot more palatable. But are you going to keep that unit for 15 years? If not, you're going to lose your shirt the first time you trade it. We are not wealthy people, but we were able to put together about $9000 for our first TT. Since $9000 was what we had, that was our maximum cap. Since that first TT, we have bought & sold and are now in our 5th unit. It took us awhile to get into the exact right unit but I think we're done now. We have never financed any of the trailers and we have always bought used, except for the first one. Our most recent purchase was a 25ft Dutchmen we got for about $8000--exactly what we had in our "RV Savings" account. I have talked to way to many people who have gotten into a great unit with all the bells & whistles, only to find out that they don't like to camp, their spouse and kids don't like to camp, they don't have the time to devote to camping, or it wasn't what they thought it was going to be. And then they're saddled with this note month after month for a rig they are barely using. I would advise that if you do decide to finance, that you really take a good hard look at the whole purchase. Don't buy any more RV than you can afford.

Camping on I-20 East between Atlanta & Augusta?

We need to spend a weekend in the vicinity of Conyers, GA. We are not very familiar with this area. It doesn't look like there's a lot to choose from. Hard Labor Creek SP looks like it would be good, but I'm not sure how far it is from Conyers. We don't need a lot of amenities, just W&E and safety. We don't boondock due to medical equipment.

RE: Downsizing

We recently downsized, too. We started with a little pop-up and gradually traded up to bigger TTs. Our last one was 30-ft which was ideal for taking kids and their friends camping. Well, now the kids are 25, 19, & 17 and they no longer camp with us. The middle one will go camping with us, but she likes to stay out in her tent. Since we wrecked out 30-footer, we decided to go back to a smaller rig. We now have a 25lft Dutchment TT and we love it! It's exactly the right size of the kind of camping that we do. If we were going to live in it full time, it wouldn't be large enough. But for 1-2 weeks or long weekends, it's great! And with it being smaller, I find it easier to hitch, tow, back up and fit into almost any camping space.

Headed out to NorthGeorgia in a bit

:B Yay! DSis (TomNLauraWA) flew in from Seattle last night to go camping over spring break with me! She is an avid camper and I know we're going to have a great time. So if anyone is camping up at Trackrock CG this weekend, look out for two older ladies on the loose!
