RE: Motorhome Fire kills 3

We just checked and all of our windows open easily. There are two other windows (behind couch and opposite of the bed) besides the emergency exit window we could use to get out, if needed. We have discussed an evacuation plan now and I'm feeling a little better. Such a horrible, frightening thing... fire in a motor home. I'm so sad, reading the links about this fire. My prayers are with the family & friends left behind.

RE: Motorhome Fire kills 3

What a horrible tragedy. Before we leave on our next trip, we will make sure the emergency exit windows open and put some silicone on them to be sure they don't get stuck. I hate to admit it, but in the year we've owned our motor home we haven't, this has served as a wake up call.

RE: Proposed USDA rule change internet puppy sales

................. I'm guessing BC Snob manages to get by okay. Last I heard, most people with the word "scientist" in their job title usually do pretty well. And apparently they get to leave their work in the lab, too. Can't beat that. Exactly! :B

................ ........... ........... ............. .......... .......... shift jobs do have their advantages, but usually pay less. Oh, don't worry I "got it". From my point of view it has no relevance to this conversation, none at all. A not so loosely veiled put down is still a put down...whether or not it hits it's mark... no pun intended.

....... There are advantages to working a wage/shift job where your responsibilities end when the hour hand comes around. The compensation isn't usually as good though there are exceptions. :h What? How in the world is that comment relevant to this topic?

RE: Laundry Day!

Hey your not so new… ........... In public forum you do need to develop some thick skin… ............... In my opinion, only 32 posts since 2010 would still be considered a newbie. Thick skin? That may take more than 32 posts and a variety of responses to grow. :W Results will vary. LOL

RE: old cats and rabies shots-

.. the rabies vaccine is something that really isn't necessary but I do it until they get older. Disagree. ........... I completely understand your position Dr. Doug. The vet we have used for almost 7 years never gives me a hard time about it, after I explained out cats' lifestyle to her. As I said in my earlier post, our cats RARELY go outside and they are supervised when they do. Both are elderly (13 & 15) and when outdoors they have never attempted to go over our chain link fence. Their chance of exposure is very-very minimal. I've had cats that did, you might recall our Goldie, a formerly feral cat that would jump a fence in a nano-second, and she was vaccinated until the end of her life. Matter of fact she was given her last rabies vaccine about 8 months before the kidney disease took away her quality of life. On edit: I thought it might be helpful to add information about the last rabies vaccine each of our cats had. Blanca, our almost 15 year old had one at almost 12 and Higgins, the 13 (or so) year old had one before we took him in as a foster in January of 2010. Both were three year vaccines, I might be convinced to give them again but it would take some convincing.... Our Sandy (gone now) wasn't given one past the age of 10, for the most part due to her lifestyle and her health issues. She lived to be almost 15. A cat I adored, my Toby developed a hematoma at the injection site when he was 14, it became a very aggressive form of small cell cancer and well... you know what that means. Would he have presented with the cancer without the vaccine(s)? Perhaps, but in his case we (my former vet and I) think the vaccine exacerbated his condition. Of course, we cannot be 100% certain. Thanks for your input, I always appreciate your advice. :)

RE: old cats and rabies shots-

Personally I stop giving the rabies & all other vaccines when my cats are over the age of 10 to 12, depending on the cat. Since mine rarely go outside and only under our supervision, the rabies vaccine is something that really isn't necessary but I do it until they get older. I still take them to the vet for their check ups but pass on the injection administered vaccines. Now, having shared that I will say that I haven't had an elderly cat that experienced an adverse reaction to their vaccinations in a LONG time but I did have one years ago that did. I would say there is a big difference in the safety of the vaccines and the technique used to administer them than there was at that time. If it is required and the vet can't provide a document that states they cannot vaccinate due to health concerns then you will likely have to get Marble vaccinated. I don't blame you for being concerned, hopefully she will do well with it.

RE: Which Sr. Dog Food would you recommend for Harlee

Chicken & rice boiled in the broth from the chicken is darned near a cure all for a funky stomach. Glad to hear Harlee is eating your home cooking. :)

RE: Personal Question $$$

We owe quite a bit less than it's worth. We're OK with a monthly payment. Everything is else we own is ours, free and clear. If we needed to, we could pay off the motor home but since the interest rate is low AND tax deductible, we haven't.

RE: Traveling w/ a pet, check this out

Too many laws have our infrastructure already burdened trying to enforce the unenforceable. There is not enough time or money or resources. After all, when you "outlaw" something then only outlaws will have it. And then there is this well made point: ......... Not only that, but given that there are no degree programs, no licensing or credentialing process for dog trainers . . how would the powers that be designate someone qualified to conduct these classes? I've met enough supposed "trainers" who know almost as much about canine behavior as the average preschooler to find the idea very scary. I have as well, due to some behavioral issues with Mugsy I've had personal experience with a couple of them in the past year or so. :(

RE: Traveling w/ a pet, check this out

Breed ban? Ban what? Here's a simple example of why that won't work Mike (mllk3rd). First you would need to properly identify the "90 pound dog" responsible for this attack.... because clearly this particular dog was NOT of just one breed lineage. American Staffordshire Terriers (AKA pit bulls) are not that large. I understand your shock (& passion) about the tragic incident and I would be right there beside the owner helping "choke down" a dog that attacked one of mine... but taking a ban the breed stance isn't going to solve anything and it certainly won't bring back your friend's dog.

RE: Traveling w/ a pet, check this out

Try a new paragraph every 1/2 dozen lines or so. My eyes start crossing with run-on sentences and I lose my place. Thanks.I'll pass that along to the AVMA who wrote the article. :) :B You find the best articles Mark, thanks! Thanks for reopening the thread, just wanted to post the link to the video of the interview from the local news station; http://www.ksby.com/videoplayer/?video_id=18969&categories=1 Thanks Now part of the "rest of the story" is available. The people who lost their pet so tragically were actually visiting the RV Park, not traveling. A horrible thing to witness, either way. I can only imagine the trauma of something like that. I have a dog that used to belong to my mom so I know what they are talking about where that is concerned....heartbreaking. :( I also note that the 90 pound pit bull... that would be one VERY LARGE pit bull, more likely a mix of something else.... has been put down. I'm glad the owner of the attacking dog took that responsibility seriously. I'm not sure they will be successful in making all owners of so called aggressive breeds muzzle their dogs in public, but they can try.

RE: help with fleas please

So you wouldn't capstar the mom, either? Yes I would, but OP indicated they could only pet her for a short period then hissing and can't handle her. Capstar is labled OK for use in pregnant and lactating animals. Good to know... just in case it comes up again. The information provided on the retailer's sites I found online didn't give enough facts. To the OP, you might be able to get a Capstar into her but it would likely take more than one person...one to hold her and the other one to pill her. Either way, I would wear long sleeves and gloves if possible. Then there is a risk she would run off afterward, unless you did it in a closed area, like your garage. Thanks again for trying to help!

RE: help with fleas please

Capstar sounds like a good idea and I've used it a time or two myself on adult animals.... but I'm not sure on two week old kittens, due to this: "CAPSTAR® is an oral tablet for dogs, puppies, cats and kittens 4 weeks of age and older and 2 pounds of body weight or greater." Not sure how it might effect a mother's milk and if it did, would it be problematic for tiny kitties? I hope Dr. Doug will check in.

RE: help with fleas please

A good, long bath is soapy water is about all you can do for kittens that young as far as I know. It would be best if momma cat gets bathed, too. Good luck with that... but please resist using any sort of powder or topical on the momma cat, it could harm her kittens. Be careful not to get water in the baby's nose(s) or mouth(s) and be sure and wash thoroughly around their ears because the fleas will go there to hide. Thank you for caring and trying to help... a bad flea infestation can actually kill a young kitten.
