RE: Recommdation of C 23 - 25 foot with 12+ mpg

Just got home from our first time being Winter Texans/Snow Birds.Took almost 5 months and put a little over 5000 miles on our Chevy Coachman 2130QB pulling a 4 door Chevy Tracker. Milage ranged from 7.9 to 11.1 mpg, with an average about 8.4. We started from MI went to Tx then traveled around the Golf of Mexico to Key West before starting north again. With just the two of us we had plenty of storage and although the Coachman is small we found that we got along just fine. The 2130QB is about 25ft from bumper to bumper.
Not a bad rig for the money eh?
I have the same thing and like it just fine.
Love the big storage under the bed.
Drives nice..plenty of power.

RE: Total Rebuild of a 1979 Dodge Class C

Man...I'm pathetic..there are a few things I want to do with my new rv,,well new in 2010 that I have still not done.
And you have pretty much built one from scratch!

RE: when to use tow/haul button

On a 6 speed chevy the last two gears are overdrives..at least on my 2010 they are.
But no lock up torque converter...least I'm pretty sure not.
When using T/H when you touch the brake it will shift down a gear also.
T/H does raise the shift points to a higher rpm ..will still hit 6th gear but like at 65 instead of 55.

RE: Total Rebuild of a 1979 Dodge Class C

As you can see the photo above,..of the Toilet showing water in the bowl, It's not really that great looking, Is there any kind of paint that we could paint this with, Has anyone ever painted there old toilet trying to get it to look a little better.???:h We are thinking about the paint that Wal-Mart has for the outdoor plastic lawn chairs. Leave the white part and paint the ugly beige.
Fusion paint for plastic.
It might work out well!

RE: 15 + mpg with V10 in 29 footer?

Even with my little 25 footer and a 6 speed auto..the best I get is like 12 going slow on the back roads..usually 9.5 10ish..don't really notice a diff pulling my 2 sleds in a enclosed trailer.

RE: TV's

Grub,
That 24 in. Naxa Flat Screen LED TV looks like an excellent TV for RVs.
Especially for drycamping .. it just sips the battery power because it uses LED backlighting. It's the largest size (24 in) flat screen LED TV I've come across that can still be powered directly from a 12V RV receptacle. That built-in DVD player is also extremely difficult to find in a 12V powered LED flat screen TV of any size. It appears to have swing-arm mounting bracket holes in it's backside, too.
Great choice!
Mines a naxa 22" with dvd/12 volt..love it but I'm going to check out the 24" led..even better yet!

RE: Winter camping.

Mount Cascades I have been to, I don't know their policy about parking in their parking lot, but you can always ask.
http://www.montcascades.ca/
Even if you get a "non" the area is desolate, and there are many places where if you ask for permission from the owner (and buy things, tip them) you can probably park in their lot (gas station, etc.) for the night.
The people up there speak strange, (french), but are terribly friendly especially if you wave the US flag and put a big smile on and try to talk to them in 2 or 3 words of french at the start of the conversation.
FYI, try saying this:
"me prendre à votre chef s'il vous plaît"
:B
The area is within commuting distance of Ottawa, and there are a lot of day trippers.
Roads are well maintained throughout the winter --- tons of parks, public areas.
Do enjoy yourself.
Thanks for the info my friend!
We love seeing the world from a different perspective..the sleds give us that opportunity!
Meet some of the nicest people that way.

RE: Winter camping.

Have you considered Mont Cascades?
It is an absolutely fabulous area.
I will look it up!
Any area that we go to I would have to find a place to park the rv..hopefully legally..lol.

RE: Winter camping.

If you ever want some real winter camping, you got to go north about 300 miles.
There, the snow depth is measured in yards (or meters), and the season is longer.
Plus, there are frozen lakes that let you access (carefully --- check with locals first) places that is hard to reach most of the time.
Do come --- Quebec is just North of you.
Funny you mention Quebec!
Just yesterday I opened up a SnoTrax mag that had a nice map of that area!
We are talking about doing it next season for a week!
Need to get my enhanced DL first!

Plus by rotating the tires around less chance of then being stuck to the hubs I would think.

RE: Winter camping.

Hi,
-37 C = -34.6 F; -42.5 C = -44.5 F
It is a simple matter to look up a converter.
Thanks,but like I said..I'm pretty lazy..lol.

RE: Winter camping.

Hi CaptStorm,
Propane stops vaporizing at -42.5 C. I'm planning to add a twelve volt outlet so I can use a 12 volt heating blanket on mine. Operating pressure for propane in an RV is 0.5 psi (11 inches of water).
I have used my propane at -37 C without problems. The tank was nearly full however.
Not sure what those temps are in normal numbers..lol.. but I like the heating pad idea if needed!

RE: Winter camping.

Great Post Capt Storm,
Wondered what you did about the outside shower on the wall of your Coach?
That would surely freeze real fast in those Temps, I am assuming you have an outside shower.....
Great Pics also!
Thanks!
Nope..no outside shower..so I could put water into the system if I wanted to then blow the lines out when returning home...but I'm to lazy for all that..lol.
We don't mind roughing it a little bit!
Those Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches are really good..worth firing the gen for!
We do cook eggs and sausage on the stove sometimes also..french toast.
Usually have a nice meal for supper on the trail!
Come back to the rv and have a few capt/cokes ..she has wine and maybe peperoni and cheese!

RE: Winter camping.

I don't put fresh water in the holding tank in the winter.
I do pour 3 or more gallons of rv anti-freeze in the black and gray tank.
Most we go out for is two nights.
We are out ridding the sleds for the most part.
We try to use the bathrooms at restaurants and what not.
That said if the wife wants to use the rv bathroom in the middle of the night..she will!
I just have to remember to pour more rv stuff down the traps for the sinks when the trip is over.
-40 would be way to cold for us!

RE: Winter camping.

Sometimes I idle the motor for a hour or so to bring the batt up some.
Seems like the gen or the motor both take about .5 galls a hour to run.
If I run both will that charge the batt even faster?
If your engine is wired to charge the house batteries.
I take it gen is charging via inverter / charger?
I am using 2 extra batteries to make up for the lower power in cold, and keeping 2 of them inside (vented).
Yes..it has a solenoid to charge the house batt.
Gen is charging through the inverter/charger.
I'll prolly add one or two more batts under the u shaped seating and vent them.
But I'm realy impressed with the one cheap batt that came with it..it's a 2010 that we bought new.
