RE: Furniture Protectors

I bought polarfleece fabric - in MY case, I'm just protecting from doghair and dirt; and polarfleece washes easily. But it's kind of thick - maybe the cats' toenails wouldn't pierce through the thicker fabric? Also, I believe the polarfleece doesn't have to be hemmed, another plus. It doesn't unravel like some fabrics.

RE: Apple Mac Flashback Virus/Worm?

Follow up: It wasn't a virus at all, but a friend's teenager had gotten into the machine without permission and somehow inflicted what looked like terminal damage. Daughter finally called Apple tech support and because this model is a Lion(?) it came with a built-in system restore feature. The Apple technician worked some kind of magic and 3 or 4 hours later, the Mac was back to factory specs. Whew!

Apple Mac Flashback Virus/Worm?

Looks like one of our kids may have gotten that bad virus in her new (2 month old) Mac. Is it now a planter or is there any hope of restoring it, or having somebody restore it? Thanks

RE: Problem with kitchen shears

I don't have the same kitchen shears, but mine are made to come apart for cleaning... gotta clean those nasty little pieces of raw chicken out of there after cutting up the bird. Messermeister Kitchen Shears Yes, mine are made to come apart so you can put them in the dishwasher. Very handy, but then they started coming apart in normal use. It must be a known problem, because Amazon immediately told me they are sending a new pair. Thanks for the idea, I hadn't even thought of that.

RE: Problem with kitchen shears

I actually bought them from Amazon two years ago. I sent them the order number and described the problem. They sent me a mailing label to return them and are sending a new pair! I hadn't even thought of that. I assumed there was a way to tighten them that I was missing, so thanks for the info! These are great shears, BTW, I use them for everything.

Problem with kitchen shears

I've had THESE SHEARS for several years and they are wonderful, but the two halves have started coming apart in use. I figured I could find out how to tighten them online, but so far no luck. Does anybody know? I don't understand the little gizmo that holds them together. Thanks for any help.

RE: Bud ran away

I recently was reading a blog about an escaped 15 yr old dog that was deaf and nearly blind. The owners were frantic but the dog had a collar and tags and was microchipped. Still days went by, with no word of the antique pooch. The owner went to a couple of nearby vets and one recognized the dog, as a lady had brought it in to be checked. It had lost the collar and tags and the microchip was a now obsolete company that the vet didn't have a reader for. So they were just lucky to get her back. I guess, in some cases, maybe the old microchips ought to be supplemented by whatever is popular now? I never thought about it.

RE: My Little Hero

Wow, that's scary! When we were working Red Cross disasters, we every so often had a client with a house fire that started in a computer. I always wondered how that happened. Our own UPS units must be 8 or 9 years old. How would a person know they were bad, unless you smelled that overheated wiring smell? Good kitty! A new catnip mouse for Piper!

RE: Waggin Train Dog Treats

Our dogs loved them but got diarrhea every time I gave them. It took a bit for me to make the connection, but when I did, that was all the evidence I needed. BTW, this was long before the current buzz.

RE: Has anybody tried the 1940 Census online website?

I tried it also but since I didn't know the address of my parents for sure, it didn't help me much. Frank I think there's a note that they are recruiting transcribers so that eventually, it will be searchable by name. That will be good. Were your parents living in a sizable city at the time?

RE: Has anybody tried the 1940 Census online website?

DH helped me figure it out. Since my folks' home was/is a block outside city limits, we had to search the "district" which I remembered. So we found it! I was disappointed that it wasn't Mom's handwriting, they had the census workers write everything, but it was interesting to see the close-by neighbors' names. This was before I was born so some I recognized as longtime residents and some I'd never heard of. Most of those houses are still there, 72 years later. Bud had to question his oldest brother to find out what the family's district in N. Florida was called back then, but he found that registry, too. Good thing he still has that brother as we would never have known how to search. Funny thing, a handful of surnames were VERY popular in that area at that time. :B

RE: Has anybody tried the 1940 Census online website?

I tried the steve morse link but there are a jillion ED numbers for Sacramento and when I clicked on a couple I don't even get a readable page. Just a black desktop with some partial pages. Maybe someone can help me? I will PM the surname and address if anybody has time. Thanks

Has anybody tried the 1940 Census online website?

I thought it would be fun to check and see my parents' census form, they lived in Sacramento in 1940. Unfortunately, searching by name is not yet available. You can only check by address but then you must use a system I couldn't decipher. There were only a few streets listed and my folks' wasn't one of them. Maybe somebody here understands that website?

RE: Prayers or positive thoughts for our Ginger.

I have to look up bullae, can you tell us anything about that condition? It sounds scary and I hope your girl recovers soon.

RE: Happened again!

I'll try to get a picture of them. I've found that the ratties are hard to catch for a picture tho, they just don't want to stand still long enough and I have a feeling "Miss Puggles" is going to be the same! You can always take it looking straight down at her, like this one: http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a2dd10b3127cceffea54dfe62900000030O08QYsmTZsxbg9vPgI/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/ Ching is wearing a navy blue "I BIT J.R." T-shirt, tells you how long ago that was. :B

RE: Kaiser insurance question

I have Kaiser Ins for the last 54 years and in Feb I was having eye problems, floaters in my right eye and flashes of light also. Called Kaiser and explained that I am in Az where there is no Kaiser and will Kaiser pay for for emergency service. After an hour and several people from Kaiser they said "it is not life and death" so Kaiser will not cover . Needless to say I will switch to AARP the next time that I can OMG, that IS a serious emergency! The signs of a detached retina, of course. Did you get it handled? Was it possible to get to CA and an area where Kaiser was available? I hope you haven't lost vision. Couple of years ago, DH had his gallbladder very suddenly go bad on a trip to Kansas and on a holiday weekend. He had excellent care, emergency surgery and between Kaiser and Medicare, it was all paid.

RE: Happened again!

She has moved from the pet taxi at night to the bed with my other two small dogs, hey what's one more in the bed, it's big enough for all of us, LOL!!!! That says a lot, doesn't it? The fact that the others accepted her so readily. Pugs are usually of good temperament, despite the fact that they scare some people and especially, some small children. They see the visible teeth as aggression. I used to say that our pug sorted out the smart people from the not-so-smart for me. The smart ones would say, "Oh, she's beautiful!" :B Could you post a photo of her with your ratties? What are you calling her? Ours never came when we called her name, though. Stubborn! :R

RE: Happened again!

The main issue with pugs is that short snout. It makes breathing problems on exertion, even riding in a car can stress them. Any surgery, even a spay, takes special care by the vet so the trachea doesn't collapse. Thdy don't birth easily, those little square headed puppies often lead to a c-section. They also can't tolerate heat. We had one we loved dearly and lost her to a heat stroke at age 12, because "everybody" thought "somebody else" left her in the house and she was outdoors on a hot day. We had a kiddies play pool and used to put her in it to cool her down. She wasn't the smartest dog we ever had and very stubborn, but absolutely everything she did was funny. They are like little clowns. They also snore loud enough to shake the house. Oh, and they shed year-round! The hair jumps off them like it was jet-propelled. A friend of mine who owned pugs said she solved the problem by getting "pug colored" sofa and carpet. But I loved ours dearly. If I carried her, she felt like a fat little ten month old baby. She never had skin or any other medical problems, other than the breathing. Once our Ching won an ugly dog contest. We were insulted but took the blue ribbon, anyhow. :B Still miss her.

RE: UPDATE!! Help! Just noticed horrible paws.

Iris, if you can get a nice chunk of tree wood with bark attached, she can have the picking at a tree experience in the safety of home. Make sure there are no ants in it. Just put the wood on some newspapers or an old tablecloth so you can gather up the chips and toss them.Glad the little bugger is doing so well. Obviously, your medical training in helping your relative kicked in here. Good for you!

RE: Something different, storm shelter with pics

Remember the case a couple of weeks ago, when the woman took her kids to the basement, wrapped them in a blanket and laid on top of them? She saved them, without a doubt, but that courageous lady lost two limbs because the house collapsed INTO the basement, severely injuring her. Still, I can't imagine anything better she could've done, under the circumstances.
