RE: ww nose cap

Don't make me stop this car or it will be brain dusters for everyone! To the OP - Most of the outside construction is going to be aluminum or fiberglass but frequently the screws are metal that can rust. Normally they are sealed very well to prevent that but over time they can become exposed. There are also a number of water based molds that are rust colored, how wet is the trailer during winter months? Might be building up somewhere and then getting washed out as visible streaks.

RE: Good weekend but had a blow out.

I can't believe I'm the first to ask "How do you know if you hit a prarie dog with a .50 cal? Not even the pink mist would be left!" Otherwise the advice on tires and graphics looks right on the mark.

RE: Decent Locks?

Make friends with a locksmith. They can either get them or tell you where to get quality locks all keyed the same. I got 3 ABUS disc style locks all keyed the same for the back door and a cable I use. They offer different grades, I went with the 26 series to make sure it had Stainless hardware inside and drill protection since it was going to be stored on the outside of my trailer. Here is one of many places CLICKYyou can buy them keyed the same.

RE: Truck Tire Suggestions

I'm running the BFG All Terrain KO tires in a LT285/70R17/E. They are just under 33" and fit my truck no problems (4x4 with pretty good factory clearance). Load range E on these are 3195 per tire. They are good for 30,000 plus miles and perform well both on and off road. They will make more noise than the Michelin if that matters to you.

RE: How do you secure you atv/suv to the floor?

Ratchet style straps - 4, one in each corner. 2 additional heavy tie downs (2000lb rated, 5000lb breaking) in the rear from the hitch to different D-Rings because I can apply way more force stopping than accelerating. Plus it would be inconvenient if it destroyed the door going out the back, it would be a total loss if it came through the front of the trailer.

RE: I broke all 8 studs clean off

Wow! I haven't seen them shear without a reason (drum lock or loose lugs). Normally it's either the rim that gets hollowed out or the entire drum tears off (bearings). Glad you and family are ok. That's a tough tow for a rig like that, glad you guys figured out the height problem before you needed a new A/C unit! Had 2 flats this season myself, both coming from OW. Luckily not on the same trip. Almost would take it to Brawley or El Centro to avoid the bridges and get it fixed there.

RE: Honda CRF450X or Yamaha WR450F

Assuming you are doing this in Montana because it can't be done anymore here in CA (dirt to street, too many CARB regulations). I'd vote the Yamaha as well, in my personal experience they require less maintenance per mile to keep running. They are also very easy to remove the de-tuning that is done to keep them eligible for green sticker / street licensing. 2003 CRF450R = rebuild every year including valves, sold in 2008. 2005 YFZ450R = never rebuilt, 7 seasons of 4 trips per (Glamis) 2007 YZ450R = never rebuilt, over 800 hours of riding at 17+ trips per year. If you take any motor preference out of the equation they are both nice bikes with good trail manners.

RE: Filters for Ford diesel 6.0

Just my 2 cents - I get them from the dealer. In the case of this truck, the OEM filters are actually built better than others. I know in many "normal" vehicles that's not the case. This is a "heavy duty" truck with a roughly $15,000 motor, I'm not going to risk damage to save a couple of bucks on the filters. I've had mine since 2005, it has 120,000 miles and almost no problems (or modifications). My mechanic is a fleet mechanic who works on ONLY the Ford 6.0. I am following his recommendation here. I have confirmed the OEM rotors and pads are better after paying for and chewing up Napa Gold pads and rotors in less than 15,000 miles. I'm back to the OEM ones now. I do love the truck, tows even my trailer with ease.

RE: 2007 Used WW FS2300 Billet or What Else?

So many comments because they sold a lot of them. I haven't seen or heard of a perfect model yet but know many people who are happy with their trailer (WW or not). It most likely can be related to maintenance and storage (IMHO). Stored inside is good but you will need to go up on the roof and add a tube of caulk or tape the minute you get home. The WW front caps are well known for leaking if you don't do this every year (but it's real easy to do every fall). Regardless of what you buy crawl up there and check the corners and other areas for any soft or crunchy sections, that would indicate a prior leak. The sagging wall issue is fairly common, it can be headed off by the installation of more outriggers, especially in / near the wheel wells. Not crazy expensive but easy to spend $1000 having it done. Is't not just the WW that have the problem but they made it worse by sometimes using non structural 2x4's as the base of the wall. Guess how I know that? Check to make sure that everything works, ask them to turn the fridge on Friday and put a half glass of water in the freezer. Within 16 hours it should be an ice cube and the refer should be in the 38-44 range. Also make sure you have them fire up the generator. Usually easy to repair but good negotiating point if it doesn't. Ask questions about brakes, bearings, greasing suspension. If they have not done any of that you may have some maintenance that needs to be done. Good luck. Even with the problems I like my WW enough to not sell it and buy something else.

RE: On the Road Flat Change Question

Had a flat coming home from New Years. Changed it easily despite having fractured my arm 90 seconds into the first ride (a story for another time). Only lost about 30 minutes from stop to go. First - Use the Lynx leveling blocks to lift the good tire(s) (and trailer) on the side with the flat. (On my triple axle that's 2 tires). If you forgot to charge your impact gun remember to loosen the lug nuts first. Second - USE THE JACK THAT CAME WITH YOUR TRUCK. It's telescoping and rated to easily lift one lightly loaded axle. I have 6 and 20 ton bottle jacks in the garage but why bring them when you already have a jack with you capable of doing the job? Sure, Nascar style is cool but it means lugging along a large, expensive aluminum jack for something you hope never happens anyway. Don't forget to make sure you can remove the lug nuts, the wrench that came with my truck won't fit because of the center caps on the trailer. I carry an old 4 in 1 "star" wrench, that way I'm good for the toys and the trailer. Just my 2 cents. Of course if I could fit my garage in the storage bins I would...

RE: WW floor rot repair & membrane?

Mine looks a lot like the "Mobile Flex Bottom Board" stuff. I would think any of the Flex Mend repair kits / tapes would work. I'm keeping the link to that site in case I need to open mine up at some point. They do have these directions for install located here.

RE: Ocotillo Wells for New Years

Will be there, group hasn't picked a spot yet. And yes, it's a rocky, windy horrible place. We'd be happy to have it all to ourselves ;) Actually wondering if everywhere else in So Cal has been as slow this year, we had no one camping near us for Halloween and Thanksgiving wasn't nearly as busy as years past.

RE: Fleetwood Redline 230FS

You can easily check flow by using an old 2-liter bottle to capture fuel from the fuel line, just disconnect at the carb. They don't require high pressure or flow but it should be a steady flow from the line. Just be careful not to shoot it all over the place and take standard precautions. I know a number of shared tanks have the pickup for the generator higher than the pickup for the fuel station. I mention this because 5 gal may not be enough, I've seen lots where the generator stops at 1/5 of a tank. Stupid design on a trailer, makes sense on a motorhome. Good luck with the DIY! They are a serious pain to remove for repair and it's inconvenient to take the whole trailer to a genset repair place.

RE: Vengeance Toy Hauler

It was a custom order without the graphics installed (although they came in a box). The dealer offered to have WW install them for $800 but in the 2006 model that meant covering half the windows. I have installed the ones on the front cap and the back door myself but the rest are still in a box. My wife and I both like it that way. Can't find any info online and haven't seen one yet. I can see the call now: 911 Operator: What's your emergency? Caller: There is this truck tailgating me! He is following me so closely it looks like he is in my pickup bed. Oh, wait...nevermind. -Click- hahahahahaha. exactly! hey bigdog, what happened to your trailer's graphics?

RE: Fuzion 300 bumper pull

Don't own a Fuzion but I do own a long bumper pull trailer. I can tell you that they are very easy to tow as long as you get the weight set in the trailer correctly. Too much on the nose makes them very wiggly. Even something as simple as 10 gallons of water and/or a cooler at the very back can offset that problem if you are without toys. Interesting thing happens when the wind blows from the side when towing. Because there is more trailer in front of the axles than behind them it actually pushes the rear of your truck with the wind, causing the nose of the truck to turn into the wind. Basically self corrects the wind push. Using a strong anti-sway bar (or dual bars) helps keep any wag from happening. No problems towing with my 3/4 ton but IMHO you will be unhappy if you don't have a diesel. They pull the weight much easier and most newer ones have some form of hill descent control (engine braking / exhaust brake) that will save the truck and trailer brakes. Good luck with the decision!

RE: roof ladder and railing

The rail is also a branch / tree guard in case you hit one of those. Not likely to happen where I normally camp, the only thing it has done for me is almost trip me over the edge. If I ever open the roof for repairs it will not be re-installed.

RE: So Cal folks without power?

No issues in Ramona, CA. During the "Great Blackout" we did use the genny in the hauler to power the refer from the house. I now make sure there is at least a 3/4 tank in the hauler with some fuel stabilizer to keep it good. I figure we are good for at least a couple of weeks, I always make sure there is at least 1 full propane tank and my house runs on propane as well (250 gal). Good luck, hope you had no property damage.

RE: Turkey, how are you cooking it while camping this year?

For anyone new to the frying it is fantastic but there is a trick... Heat the Oil. Turn off the flame. Put in the turkey. Turn on the flame again. This way if it overflows, or boils over because it wasn't dry there is no open flame to catch the hot oil on fire. It's so easy but some people forget... Mine will be boneless breast on the rotisserie on the grill. Or if the wind is really up in the oven. Ooops, I said the W word.

RE: Inline Fuel Filter Onan 4.0

Using a clear plastic one on my 5500, picked up at hardware store in the lawnmower isle. Flow rate is pretty low on a generator, less than 1 gph under most loads. No need to get fancy. Installed it below the carb where there was already room for oneand the line was running, removed the factory crappy one and replaced that with brass fitting with fuel line nipple. Bought a spare filter and tossed it in a drawer in the trailer, best 2 buck insurance policy.
