RE: Pepsi and Horse show

We own Quarter Horses. Back in the 80s and 90s, every judge wanted what I called the "Whipped Dog" look. The lower the head was held, the higher the Pleasure Horse scored. Ours did not do well at shows but were lovely, safe trail horses. They lowered their head when they needed to look at a rough place on the trail before picking their way over it. Otherwise they looked at the scenery and enjoyed life a lot.
I place a lot of the blame for soring, for tying heads down, etc. right on the show ring and what the judges are looking for in different breeds.

RE: Calling all cooks -- I need your help

We fed 65 people on a rockhound trip. Have a canner sized kettle and made beef stew in it. Used most of the normal veggies with the addition of beans, which tasted fine in there and cheaply stretched the beef stew. Offered both saltines and oyster crackers that went very well.

RE: Camping with Puppy tips?

Someone mentioned having a blanket for a sleeping site. We trained both of our dogs to a towel. No matter where the towel is placed, they lie on it. Makes it so easy to visit friends and take the dogs. Towels fold up small and when put in an out of the way area, the dogs are out of the way. We use it in the motorhome when I am cooking, no dogs underfoot; when we have company that needs to sit on the sofa; and at night so they don't roam the motorhome.
Enjoy your puppy, he's a cutie.

RE: Anti bark collars

We have never needed to use one, but I would if necessary. Someone mentioned cattle and horses and electric fences. That reminded me of when our current mare was born. Her mother got her up and walked her around the field next to the electric fence. Every 100 feet or so, her mom would push her into the fence. That little filly would jump completely under her mom. Mom did this all around the field, then quit. Never did it again. To this day, we can keep Lucky in the field with a piece of string. When the elk tear down her fence, she knows where it is supposed to be and won't cross the fenceline.

RE: Fun things for kids to do on the long stretches of road?

We had 2 kids. Each took a side of the road. Counted horses, pintos were 2 points, rest were 1 point and white ones took all points away. It really kept their interest.

RE: 2 dogs and 2 cats fultiming

Oh, I forgot. It doesn't say where "home" is. NW WA does not have heartworms so we don't treat for it. A month before we leave for Arizona, we start the dogs on heartworm prevention. We also give them a pill for one month after we return home. This was what our vet recommended.

RE: 2 dogs and 2 cats fultiming

We travel with 2 50# dogs and a cat. Dogs lie in the floor next to the engine cover in our Class A. As close to us as they can, knowing they are not allowed anywhere near the driver's seat. Tuff the cat joins Max under the bedspread overhang. It is warm and dark there. He comes out the minute the motor shuts off.
Feed them lightly in the morning if you are going to be driving all day. Main meal at night, just for carsick safety. Cat and one dog travel fine, the other dog is iffy and really prone to sickness on a curvy road.
We have gotten Tuff, the cat, to accept (not like, but accept) a collar and leash. Occasionally we take him for a drag if we are in a quiet and not many campers place. He was 9 years old before we retired and started snowbirding. We never thought about leash training when he was younger.
Enjoy your crew!!

RE: TURKEY LEFTOVERS EMERGENCY!!!

We get the biggest turkey we can find. This year it was a 34 pounder!! We fed 17 for TDay and I seal-a-mealed six packages to go with us in the rv. We have eaten cold sandwiches and hot turkey sandwiches until today when we are getting tired of turkey. I will make a big pot of turkey soup to freeze with the carcass and will freeze the rest of the meat for later meals.
I don't know how many meals we get out of a big turkey but it is many.

RE: Working Dogs vs Lap Dogs

Abby, Australian Cattle Dog, was the most velcro dog that ever owned me. At the same time, she was a very confident, curious, girl. I now have an Aussie who is timid and extremely velcro. With her, it is lack of confidence and I am stumped how to help her, so we just live with it. Years and years ago we had an American Eskimo Dog. Wonderful, bouncy, confident and loving. Great lap dog but too much grooming with a young family to get another one.
