RE: Eastern Shore, VA restaurant suggestions

Tammy & Johnny's in Melfa for fried chicken. Not enough space for RV parking.
Sting Rays just a mile or so north of Kiptopeke State Park.

RE: Looking for campground in MD, PA, WV, VA with hotel on site

Any of the Virginia State Parks with newer cabins (such as Lake Anna or James River). The cabins are fully furnished - bring your own sheets and towels. They are not rustic, very nice. No TV but does include fireplace, microwave, ice maker, gas grill, porch with rocking chairs.

RE: Personal Property Tax

OP here. Everyone missed the point. No problem with the taxes, just figure it is part of cost of the toy. The point is, if the rates differ for car and RV be sure to check your bill to make sure you got the lower rate for RV. If not, the city folks are very nice about correcting it for you.

RE: Personal Property Tax

Yes, we have state registration, city sticker and personal property tax. There is also real estate tax, but no school tax. Still overall cheaper than Central NY, by nearly half.

RE: How to research the tiny city/county campgrounds

A couple of websites that have been recommended on this forum include
http://www.uscampgrounds.info/
and
http://www.ultimatecampgrounds.com/
Sometimes you will also find such campgrounds in directories such as Trailer Life and Woodalls. You can also map out your route, find your approximate stopping place, and check on http://www.rvparkreviews.com/ to find places.

Personal Property Tax

Just received the personal property tax bill from the City of Virginia Beach. Again this year they had incorrectly billed at the car tax rate ($3.57 per 1000) rather than the RV rate ($1.50 per 1000). Pretty significant savings to call the city # on the back of the bill. I know there is at least one other rv.net member in Va Beach.
The only depressing part is seeing how small the assessed value is :) I guess that I should just remember that and how much fun it is to wash when thinking of getting a newer larger fifth wheel.

RE: central Virfginia - Petersburg to Appomattox

There are not a lot of choices for private parks around Lynchburg; we travel to that area frequently to visit family. James River State Park is about 20 minutes from Appomattox - 2 lane road to get there, but not bad and the sites are fine for your rig. You will like this park (no sewer) - nice new bathrooms, laundry, large sites - just buy groceries when in town. There are also newer larger sites at Holliday Lake State Park, but we have not been there. Further west, you could try Smith Mountain Lake State Park - you would need one of the 50 ft sites and they are all on a hill.
1775 is correct - do not take 60, 130 or 501 from Lynchburg with the MH. Either take I64/I81 or take 450 west to I81.
There was the battle of Lynchburg and there are some markers and Fort Early, but there is a lot more to see in Appomattox. Lynchburg was a supply depot for the south.

RE: best way out of Danville

29 64 81
We use 17 66 81 when heading to CNY, but 29 is good, no reason for you to go east

RE: Rudd Creek Recreation Area, VA

You probably want I64 West. It joins with I77. We've never taken 77 to Columbus, but took US 35 from I64 and it was a very good road (4 lane divided, unlimited access).
The easiest drive from Rudds Creek to I81 is probably to follow US 58 west to US 29 north to US 460 west to US 220 to I81 north. We've also just stayed on 220 north to I64 (towing a 30' 5er with a diesel). That route you hardly notice the hills. You could also take 58 west to 29 north and stay on that until you hit I64 at Charlottesville. Someone who lives up near Roanoke or Lynchburg might have some better advice. Do NOT plan to take US 60 or US 501 across the mountains.

RE: One goodie you save just for camping/trips?

Two things actually: peanut butter filled pretzels from Costco (nibble while we drive, are really good with grapes) and chocolate filled Oreos. We've found that even when they are in the house we don't eat them until it is time to travel. I didn't use to think that Oreos could get stale :)

RE: Best coverage, AT&T/Verizon?

We purchased an iPad with the Verizon option, and just get month to month service since we only need it when we travel. On our first trip, we discovered that for the month-to-month no contract plan, that means you only have service from Verizon towers (not out of network towers). We encountered that in southeast GA, where we had cell but not iPad.

RE: Brake issue with 5th wheel or TV?

We have had this happen twice to our 2008 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD Duramax / Allison. Both times we were able to take the truck to the dealer and get it repaired under warranty. Similar but different parts.
Have nothing but kudos for our dealer who overnighted the part to us the first time so that we could head to NY for a funeral. Of course the second time was also the first day on a planned trip to NY, so maybe the truck just doesn't want to go there.

RE: Best date to go to Williamsburg,Va.

It will be cooler in May.
Was there the end of March and there were some school groups, but the chaperones/teachers kept them under control and moving so it was not a problem.

RE: Cigs butts on ground, garbage in fire pit and RV patio mats

Get yourself a breathable mat. You will really like it on all those sites where there is no grass. Oh, and please don't be annoyed by those plastic bags of doggie poop and cigarette butts under the edge of our camper at the side of our mat. We will pick them up and throw them away before we leave, about when we pick other folks trash out of the firepit.

RE: Ham radio in my Roadtrek - rig and installation suggestions

Agree with the detachable head dual bander.
As for "To get it past the wife, it must look near factory installed :-)" you could compromise on the loss of through the glass, maybe take her to some hamfests and walk around the parking lot looking at various antenna mounts (isn't that one of the most fascinating parts of a hamfest?), and convince her to get her license (although you might lose some of your operating privileges and find yourself scheduled to visit more hamfests via the RV). You do want to ensure you have some way to remove your antenna because of the height issue. You could do what the OM did to me -- drill the hole through the roof of the brand new truck while I was away, so when I got home it was a done deal. 73s

RE: Campgrounds in and near Norfolk, VA

selectsplat is correct, Holiday Trav L Park is nice but quite a drive. Chippokes would be a long drive. First Landing State Park is closer. If you stay anywhere in Virginia Beach, allow extra time to get through the tunnel. There is also Newport News City Park (probably the shortest drive). There are lots of places if you qualify for military campgrounds,
