RE: Yahoo Problems?

I'm seeing issues with the free Yahoo mail and Thunderbird not able to log in to retrieve email. Not a big problem for me as I only use it for access to Yahoo Groups. I'm not sure what they are doing to cause these issues?

RE: Computer Security

I just read a wikipedia article on TrueCrypt and I don't think I want to use this. I think it's clear that the guys who created it, who are using a lot of different methods to hide their real identity, clearly intend for it to be used to illegal reasons otherwise they wouldn't hide. I don't use TrueCrypt, but the questions you mentioned is "one" reason I use DiskCryptor.

RE: Computer Security

You enter the password initially to access the disk or partition, similar to log in to your system OS. Then the encrypt/decrypt is done seamlessly on the fly, so you don't have to keep re-entering the password. Just use files or programs as you normally do. Some newer notebook HDs have a similar system built in.

RE: Computer Security

You can use whole disk, virtual disk or a partition encryption scheme which work on the fly. There are a couple of free open source utilities available. TrueCrypt is one of the more popular ones. This should secure your data from most anyone except the most adept individuals. However, there is a commercial utility geared toward law enforcement and enterprise users that claims to break TrueCrypt encryption called Passware. Another free open source encryption utility which is apparently lighter on system resources than TrueCrypt, while also able to directly encrypt the system partition is called DiskCryptor. This is what I use for my notebook. These types of security utilities are particularly useful for laptops, as by their very nature of being portable, are more likely to walk.

RE: Smart Protection 2012 Virus - HELP!!!!!

Use one of these methods, Kaspersky Smart Protection 2012 removal or Remove Smart Protection 2012 (Uninstall Guide).

RE: Yahoo Problems?

Have you tried turning Javascript off in Firefox, Tools>Options>Content and uncheck "Enable Javascript". Click OK. Log into Yahoo Mail, and follow prompts to use Yahoo Mail Classic.

RE: 64 bit and 32 bit Computers

Some software developed for a 2 bit OS is may be a challenge on 64 bit. Would also be a challenge for 32 bit. :B

RE: 64 bit and 32 bit Computers

Lenova has great warranty service. Yes they do. I had a hardware issue once, and called tech support. They FedEx a prepaid overnight box which "floated" the laptop inside. Had the laptop fixed and overnighted back to me in three days. No charge.

RE: Confession of a new Smartphone user

Actually some of the uses mentioned do sound interesting. BUT I pay under $100 a YEAR for my cell phone service, including minutes. How muchg do these fancy plans and "smart" phones cost? I'm paying not much more than you, but have an HTC Droid Android 2.3 smartphone using the Verizon network. I'm not using 3G data on my phone, and have it turned off, relying on a separate and much faster 4G WiFi hotspot. There are definitely compromises, such as having to pay for your phone upfront, and in my case, no ready access to mobile 3G data directly from the phone, but always available if needed. Not really important as I need my smartphone primarily as a phone. And using it as an all in one device just drains the battery too quickly. Plus, in many instances, I'm assigned a smartphone on a project anyway, which I believe is primarily due to a dedicated number and preloaded company contacts lists. But, then you have to take the time to learn the operation of that particular smartphone. And there are differences even with the same Android OS due to manufacturer specific designs or interfaces. I'm currently assigned a Samsung Galaxy S2 in Park City, UT, and couldn't figure out how to access my voicemail messages. Plus, my HTC smartphone has dedicated hard call buttons, whereas there are only soft keys on the Galaxy. I'm not even sure if there is a way to answer the phone without resorting to the soft swipe answer action? :h

RE: Lap top decided to quit the internet

There are so many issues that can cause WiFi connection problems. I generally first try doing a Windows "repair" on the adapter. You may be able to access repair directly by right-clicking your Windows tray wireless connection icon. You can also try doing a System Repair to an earlier date. What has helped me in the past was by checking Windows Event Viewer logs. This was particularly useful tracing a somewhat difficult to troubleshoot connection issue, in which my computer would also successfully connect to my hotspot, but had no access to the Net. Turned out to be a corrupted TCP/IP stack, apparently caused by a third party network monitoring utility update. I was able to rebuild the stack without having to load any replacement Windows files, and now works perfectly. Would have been a much more frustrating process had I not checked Event Viewer.

RE: Computer maintenance?

I just did this when a controller on my motherboard(MB) failed. Decided I just might as well go ahead and give the desktop a thorough cleaning. Blasting a can of air at lose dust worked fine, but didn't make a dent with any embedded dust, so resorted to using a soft brush, compressed air, and a vacuum. I also had to disassemble heat-sinks and fans on my CPU and GPU to dislodge all the dust out. Also, gave all the fins on the power supply and case fans a gentle brushing with a tooth brush, no flossing. :B Then blew off lose particles with canned air. Took longer than I had anticipated, but now like new.

RE: Miffed at Camping World

OK....I have been looking at a metal Pet Fence from Camping World for weeks to purchase. About a week ago the pen was on sale for 36.99 with regular price 44.99. So we figured it would be valid when we went to the RV show in Albuquerque that same week. It wasn't there at the show so the following Monday we went to Camping World where it was now on Sale for 49.99 regular price 51.99! I walked out! Today I got my Camping world sale E-mail and the Pet Fence is now on Sale for 51.99! Regular Price 62.39. WHAT! I thought sales were supposed to be LESS and NOT MORE? What is up? I was so miffed that I emailed this same thing Customer Service! It's off to Wally World I go! Sheila aka... Well, I have to admit, that's an interesting marketing concept? http://i.imgur.com/HHvAn.gif Better hurry before it's on sale for $99.99, regular price $124.99? :B

RE: What is best format to capture Hi8 video to digital

Its been about 2 years since I used my Sony (Vegas) NLE software, however, be aware that the MPEG 2 codec is a separate license not included in the base software...at least in my iteration of Sony. This may or may not be a problem for you You're not limited to using the built-in codecs with Vegas as it can use most VFW codecs installed on your system. There are many freely available video/audio codecs that don't require a license. Including MPEG 2.

RE: Avast anti-virus problem??

Is there anyway to disable Avast without completely uninstalling it just to check if it is causing a problem with Firefox? You can see if this still works. Right-click on Avast tray icon, and select Shield Controls. Look for the option to disable for 10 minutes. Then try restarting Firefox.
