I have seen a crew of men soliciting a silver colored roof coating for park models. I was near one that was sprayed and it had a very strong kerosene smell. A friend of mine said it was kerosene with a bit of silver paint mixed in. Sounds like a scam to me. Anyone know anything about it?

No person is completely worthless ..... one can always serve as a bad example.

There's a legitimate aluminized roof coating that uses a rapid dispersing solvent to thin it for spraying that has a kerosene like smell to it. There are also scammers that use actual kerosene to cut ordinary thick aluminized roof coating to stretch it for much more coverage than intended. The first good rain storm usually shows which one was applied. If the contractor is local with a good reputation, then he's likely using the good stuff. If he's from out of state and selling material "left over from a big commercial job", a common ploy, then keep a bucket handy to catch the inevitable leaks.

Just as a word of warning, typical RV roofs do not tolerate "petroleum distillates" like kerosene. I don't know about the "good stuff" Dutch referred to, but you put a kerosene based coating on an RV rubber roof, you should expect really bad things to happen fairly soon thereafter.

Well, there are three posibilities.

There is a product called, as I recall Silvercoat, It is a tar based roof coating with silver pigment (paint) and it is a legitimate product, I think one brand is either Kool Kote or Kool roof, and I used to sell it (By the gallon, not by the roof) also comes in white.

I am sure there are other brands as well.

Some folks apply it with sprayer.. And some brands may indeed have a kerosene smell.

And there is a scam where thy basically put about a gallon of this in 5-10 Gallons of kerosene and spray it on,, Then get the heck out of town before it rains and washes it away.

I have seen both.. So, I can not advise you.

IF the company is legit then they have a business license, they can show you workman's compensation insurance, and other documents..

Fly-By-Nights. generally do not have documentation.

Or like the banner over the tent said in the Munster's episode: Herman's New Car

"Honest John's Used Cars"
"We're Here To Stay"

(Remember it was over a Tent)

Home is where I park it.

We had a crew come through southern Kentucky offering to spray roofs for a cut rate price and they were found to be travelling scammers by the sheriff's department after a number of complaints from surrounding counties.
