Has anyone else noticed a trend like this:

The original poster says some thing like "I want to know about xxxx but, I do not want responses about xxxxx." (Related to the question)

Personally I find that arrogant. I do not respond to these type of posts, although I may have relevant information. I would not want to break the posters self imposed "rules."

Help us all if thread drifts slightly off course as often the OP will complain about that too.

I also wonder, considering this is a public forum, why ask?

I know that this happens but it seems to gaining popularity lately.

Hardly arrogant at all. The op is simply trying to be specific about the information being sought. And, if people will honor such a request the thread stays on topic and can be very beneficial.

I believe it comes from a little experience on the forums ... quite a few responders will answer a different question as if it's relevant.

For Example:

Q: What kind of gas mileage can I expect with a 2007 GMC 6.0 w/3:73 ...

A: You can tow more with a 4:11 ...

LOL! There are a number of topics in here that generate loads of off-topic responses. topics like extended warranties, dog poop, waste tank maintenance, RV loans, etc., etc., etc....

If I ask a question about getting an RV loan, I don't want responders preaching to me about paying cash for everything in life and why I'm an idiot for financing.

there are just some topics where you know these kinds of unwanted responses will be provided, so why not try to head them off up front? Even though it almost never works! ;-)

I've done it. As others have stated when you are on here long enough you know you will get answers that you don't want. ie: I have tried a certain method and does not work for me, I have stayed at x CG and don't want to stay there or the more than abundance of ripping you get from some on here about what you are doing is not what they would do. It's clearly an effort to trim the responses to what is relevant. That said it usually doesn't work

I once asked whether or not I should buy a truck based on the price I was being quoted. I did not ask for any opinion on the merits of the truck in question only the price quoted. Naturally some had to tell me they would never buy that brand of truck. Those posts were not helpful.

I think a general question would welcome many opinions. A specific question should elicit specific responses.

Looking at or answering an OP's limiting question so narrowly and bluntly doesn't really answer the question asked or expand the OP's knowledge of what's actually involved with the question asked. Blinders won't help anyone see the real world facts or even a poster's answer in most threads.

What color is actually red? OR What makes the red color appear red. About the same question asked. One has no real definable answer and the other can be answered with detailed educational facts. Don't ask a question if you don't want to know the real answer!

And the point is: sticking to the op's question and not sidetracking with tangent trivia or unrelated responses.
