Hi,
in preparation of a one week stay in NYC, I want to buy a blu-ray about the City. May be fictional, if it contains lots of beautiful images taken in the city.
Regards
Peter

Quite a few out there. Been seeing a few recently.

"Oxygen" a thriller I watched this morning.
"A Brooklyn State of Mind" (1998)
"The Iceman" (2013)
"54" (1998)
"Staying Alive" (1983)
"Entropy" (1999) a film about making a film in Lower Manhattan
"Stand Up Guys" (2012)
"Sunday in New York"
"The Godfather" (series)
"Goodfellas" (1990)
"The Apartment"
"Breakfast at Tiffany's"
"They All Laughed"
"Miracle on 34th Street"
"Any Wednesday"
"Taxi Driver"
"Once Upon A Time in America"
"A Tree Grows in Brooklyn"
"Saturday Night Fever"
"Annie Hall"
"Manhattan"
"Sweet Smell of Success"
"Bringing Up Baby"
"The Lost Weekend"
"Dog Day Afternoon"
"The Naked City"
"On the Waterfront"
"Before Sunset" (2004)
"Desperately Seeking Susan"
"Rosemary's Baby"
"Midnight Cowboy"
"Hannah and Her Sisters"
"Dinner at Eight"
"The Pawnbroker"
"Glengarry Glen Ross"
"42nd Street"
"Libeled Lady"
"Sabrina" (1954)
"The French Connection"
"Kramer vs Kramer"
"Ghost Busters"
"Barton Fink"
"Night on Earth"
"A Bronx Tale"
"In America"
"Spellbound"
"The Big Clock"
"West Side Story"
"A Thousand Clowns"
"Sophie's Choice"
"It Happened on Fifth Avenue"
"Funny Girl"
"Broadway Danny Rose"
"When Harry Met Sally"
"The Fisher King"
"Pillow Talk"
"A New Leaf"
"Trading Places"
"The Unbelievable Truth"
"The Goodbye Girl"
"A Chorus Line"
"Tootsie"

All films shot in NYC, that I've watched. Don't know about BluRay releases, I watch mostly on Turner Classic Movies and NetFlix, and from the 200 or so DVDs I've collected of re-watchable films.

Then there would be the TV series like "Gossip Girl", "Friends", "Taxi", Seinfeld", and "Ugly Betty." I think "Seinfeld" gives a fairly decent taste of what life might be in Manhattan, and most of it was shot in NYC locations, interiors as well as on the street.

Hi Tom,
thanks for this impressive long list of 62 movies.
To get in the mood for a Manhattan in 2014, I will stick to the most recent ones (last 10 years), that play in the present. I found one in your list.

"Stand Up Guys" (2012)

Does it have good photography?
I would like to see lots of places in Manhattan :-)

Thanks
Peter

When someone asks about NYC I bet they only think of Manhattan and not Staten Island, Queens, Brooklyn or the Bronx that are all a part of NYC.

I just watched "Stand Up Guys" last week, it is mostly interior scenes and night action outdoors. The cinematic style tends toward "dark" as does the tone of the story.

Watched "Arbitrage" (2012) last night, had scenes in lower Manhattan and Central Park. At one point a father and daughter stepped out of their Wall Street office into Central Park (it is only 50 blocks).

The "Seinfeld" series is mostly in the Central Park West area and Midtown (neighborhoods frequented by the star in real life). A lot of movies with outdoor shots in Manhattan will be around Central Park West, because the neighborhood is amenable to setting up a film crew without blocking major streets. Accommodating film crews is what also causes NYC locations to be in Queens and Brooklyn.

Having been on a tour of Manhattan for a week this December, I think I now understand what you seeking. I had so many films in the first list because I was thinking of putting the experience together from many little pieces.

I can't recall anything recent, that I've seen, which might serve well as a visual tour of the city, not like some of the films from the 1940s-60s in which exploring NYC was central to what the film maker was doing. The most recent for which I recall that intention might be "Desperately Seeking Susan."

"The Out of Towners" had daytime touring, at least in the earlier Jack Lemmon version. I'm not so familiar with the later (1999) remake, could stand to watch it only once, and don't recall seeing much of the city.

"The World of Henry Orient" had some nice travelogue qualities, but that was made 50 years ago. "A Little Romance" does something similar for Paris, about 15 years later; indeed, easier to find "tour" films of Paris, Rome or Venice, than New York.

Of the films set in NYC the past ten years, most of those I've seen have been heavily overlaid with CGI to represent another era, or have been filmed in a substitute city (Toronto is popular for this, I've also seen Montreal used).

Manhattan is a very "close" place, difficult to photograph except around the parks, or from altitude, which is why many films have an aerial shot or a view from across either river to establish location, some location filming in a few key places, then off to a less expensive city for the rest of the urban street locations. Most of the audience will not have a visual experience to identify which North American city is in the shot. Thus putting together the list, I stayed with films I knew were shot in NYC, not just set in NYC.

I'll keep looking.

OK, not a movie but a travel vid of NYC. Just 6 min, and may provide some facts or insight on the city. Click the graphic above to play.

1492, that's great. it fits my NYC tourist experience well (the city needs 1 or 2 years of my time, if I can figure out how to afford it). No commercial film has capturd the NYC experience that well, one would need a month to appreciate what is shown in those few minutes.

This should help to OP more than any movie can, and I'm ready to go back formore, after I do my recaps of Budapest and Prague.

Thanks 1492,
now that I see this, I know that that is what I was looking for :-)
I guess the 6 minutes provide more views of NYC than any motion picture.

Thanks again
Peter
