Are there any recommended campgrounds between Buffalo NY and Cape Hatteras NC? We have never gone on this route before and have no reservations - not even in Cape Hatteras. All suggestions welcome.
Thanks, Gary & Maureen

We go from Syracuse to Myrtle Beach a lot. Always stop at the Yogi Bear in Emporia Virginia the first night before going in the next day to MB. Close to I95 and have pull throughs for the overnighters. Can't help you with Hatteras, we would love to go there sometime but have not made it yet. Good luck. What route will you take?

We stay at http://www.americamps.com/ near Richmond and then make the rest of the trip the next day - either the outer banks or Myrtle beach.

If you want to cut the trip up more then stop at Jellystone campground in Hagerstown, MD. Nice large RV sites - pull throughs.

We travel south via I81 and I95. Your route may be a little different - getting to I81 or I95.

We like to travel down the Eastern Shore of DE-MD-VA as it is less crowded and more scenic than the I-95 corridor. I would come south on I-81, pick up the PA Turnpike Northeast Extension to I-476 around the west side of Philly to I-95 South. Get off I-95 onto Route 1 in DE. Follow Rt-1 and Rt-13 all the way down the Eastern Shore to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. You can take I-64 around the south side of Norfolk to Rt 168/158 onto the Outer Banks. The are plenty of campgrounds on the Eastern Shore for overnight stops.

On OBX, where you stay depends on what you like to do. The most family oriented resort type places are at the north end of Hatteras Island - Camp Hatteras and the KOA are the biggest.

We prefer to travel further down Hatteras Island, and our favorite place is Frisco Woods Campground on the sound side. There are also Federal Campgrounds, but the do not have hookups.

If you are off season, you don't need reservations too long in advance, but I would have something just in case.

Lots of information here on the forums about the outer banks ...

Last year we stayed at the Cape Hatteras KOA in our 5th for week then took the ferry (free) to Ocracoke Island and stayed in the national camp ground for a week. Who needs hookups? I had great data card reception and Sprint cell phone reception. We then took 5th on 2 hr ferry ($75) to Swan Landing and back to civilization. I would do Ocracoke Island again.

We've broken up our trip from CT to Hatteras by stopping in Staunton VA along Rte 81 at the Walnut Hills KOA. There's a Flying J at the exit and it's a relatively easy on\easy off campground. Check it out.

Ocracoke Island and Frisco Woods both sound appealing
We now plan to stop at Selkirk Shores State park in NY on our way south for a night or two.
I have not been there since 1956!! (I was 10yo)
Should be interesting
