I'm not sure it makes any difference on the model and make but just in case I am talking about 2003 E450 (10 cylinder gas) Ford chassis which is the bases for a 2004 Tioga 32' RV.
I bought this rig used and from the day I bought it, I could smell gas fumes coming from the tank. I bought a portable combustible gas sniffer and sure enough it was leaking.
The end result was that one of the studs that holds in place the fuel pump assembly had a defect which cause the fuel pump flange to be skewed and thus not seal.
Above all that seal and assembly are the hoses that have both fuel and vapor such as the vapor return hoses and so forth.
When I was handed the hoses after the (expensive) repair, I noticed the fuel approved hoses were not only stiff but the hose was deteriorating in such a way as to turn into power (at lease on the outside). It was obvious to me that they had perforations and were leaking fumes as well.
I am wondering if anyone else has ever seen that happen to fuel approved hoses.
I just find it hard to believe that hoses made specifically for fuel would do that. Maybe the inside of fuel hoses are made up of different rubber then the outside..
I'm sure stumped.. I just know it is fixed and now safe.

We had a 1997 Ford Escort California emission car, that had almost 200,000 miles on it, my wife and i drove it, both kids used it for school too. The rubber emission hoses, vacuum hoses, and vapor recovery hoses all deteriorated and fell apart into "oreo bits"! The cost of replacing all the hoses and the fact that the Escort transmission was slipping (and would cost $$$) to fix, all ended up with us just donating it to charity.

Sorry to have seen it go, it was an amazingly trouble free car!

Cjag,

This is an ongoing issue. For most of my life 30R-4 to 30R-6 covered anything you might have needed. A coach the age of your should have been at least 30R-6 and that was supposed to handle "gasahol" safely. Guess what??

Even the rubber companies are having a hard time keeping up with the damage that the new fuels are doing to even modern hardware. (If you are dealing with a relic like ours, it is real big fun - Not) SAE has been screaming along creating new standards to be part of the 30R-numbers. I just bought some 3/8 30R-9 hose for a little over 6$ a foot. I still need some 1/2 for the tank vent, I can't even buy it.

Only the government could think adding alcohol to petroleum gasoline is a good idea. The only way it cuts emissions is by destroying older vehicles. It does not help emissions in a properly maintained engine. I know, that is what I did for several decades.

Hi Matt,
Can you explain what 30R-4 or 6 is please? I suspect it is the grade/composition of rubber hoses.
Can you tell me if the hoses are made such that the rubber is the same on the inside and the outside? I suspect it is.
Finally, I am trying to get my mind wrapped around how hoses deteriorate because of vapor when some hoses have raw gas in them all the time and never fail.
Hope you can help with that.
John
