I think I would add Grand Teton National Park right after Yellowstone. It's only about 60 miles or so away and it is on your way home. You should make reservations now for campgrounds in or near the parks. Have a great trip.

2-3 weeks in the summer? I would skip the southern part of that road trip and concentrate on the northern tier. No matter what, cut the stops in half and you will have fun.

I'd love to skip the southern portion but Momma has family in Tulsa we have promising to visit.....

Maybe I'll drop the Grand Canyon/4 corners and focus more time in yelowstone/grand teton.

Grand Canyon, do you want to be there or check it out and then move on? You have a lot on your trip, if check it out and move on AND you like trains stay at the Grand Canyon Railway park in Williams and take the train out. Doesn't give you but a few hours at the canyon but it is a nice relaxing ride out and back. Route 66 is a short walk from the park and during the summer they have old west shows on the main street each night. Check with the park and if you have AAA they have deals for 2 nights and the trip to the park.

4 corners is more of a pass through not really a place to spend a lot of time, IMHO. Do you like zoo's? If so don't miss the Denver and Tulsa's was pretty good too.

If you like hiking and checking out nature there is Arches national park in south eastern Utah. The area you are looking to cover is more like a 3-5 week and spend any time at each area.

We did this several years ago when the kids were young, DW's grandparents and aunts and uncles are up in Vinita OK. We managed to run along 40 to OK and then took 70 back to Utah and 15 south. Easily burned up 2 weeks and only spent a day or two at each except OK where we spent 4 days.

ok, just discussed logistics with Momma. I think i got Tulsa and Denver off the list.

Looking like Rushmore, Tetons and Yellowstone!

Any camp location recommendations for Teton/Yellowstone?

Grand Canyon: Trailer Village..plan on two days minimum. Use the trolleys.
4 Corners: KOA in Holbrook and take day trips to: Petrified Forest, Painted Desert, 4 Corners...another 2 days.
Tulsa: Enjoy your family time.
Rapid City: So much to do there. Stay at Rafter Bar J. View Mt. Rushmore during the day but make sure you attend the lighting ceremony at night. Custer State Park for the buffalo. Bear Country: Driving tour through bear country. worthwhile. Black Hills, Devil's Tower, Wall Drug (a waste IMHO) Badlands, (another driving tour but you can stop and hike the hills).1880s Train ride...Lots to do, not much time......Dennis

I recommend Colter Bay in Grand Teton. A wonderful place. Last summer we stayed in Livingston MT just north of Yellowstone. Beautiful area. Unless you are a Harley person be sure to avoid Mt Rushmore during the bike meet in Sturgis. We went to Frontier Days in Cheyenne WY last year. Lots of fun. We also were in the Four corners area. There are lots of great things to do in that area. There are MANY indian ruins and parks. We stayed in Bluff which is a few hours east of Monument Valley. We also stayed in Mesa Verde. A really beautiful park and great area to stay.

We did the Teton/Yellowstone/Rushmore/Crazy Horse/Badlands/Custer tour last September and we took 4 weeks to see everything, but didn't!

I think you are planning WAY too much for 3 to 3 week trip. There are some long driving days that you should break up. Since you are in SoCal, I suggest sticking with Salt Lake City, then Tetons and Yellowstone. Maybe stay at Moab, Utah on the way home. Arches NP is terrific!

Do Mt. Rushmore/Crazy Horse and all that in a separate trip.

For Yellowstone, stay for 3 nights/4 days to see all. Try to reserve a spot at Fishing Bridge Campground right in Yellowstone NP. It is the only campground in the park with hook-ups! All other CGs are dry camping.

You should try to plan to stay at least 3 nights at any place you wish to tour, as there are lots of things to see in the Teton/Yellowstone Area, as well as the Arches NP and Moab.

Salt Lake City is a must see.

Good luck, and plan waaay ahead for a summer trip!

Happy Trails!
