We love camping in our Arkansas State Parks!! Stayed at a couple of Corp of Engineer sites too...which if you were going to have trouble might be at those locations, but so far never had problems.

I for one am going to side with the OP. State parks can be really scary places and I wouldn't go there if I was you. Especially Rocky Gap SP in western MD. Don't go there.

More room for us.

We have camped in nothing but state and Army Corps Campgrounds since we have been camping. I have seen sheriff patrols drive through just checking things out or they might just be enjoying themselves. Everyone of the campground hosts have been extremely nice. The only problem that ever bothered us was some guy chopping wood for a fire after 11PM one night...hosts talked to them after that.

We love the state parks, beyond the occasional party that gets a little loud we have never had a single issue. The only time we have had any theft was private campgrounds and even that was an oddity in all my years of camping.

You have been watching way to many movies. I mainly only stay in state parks when I'm in the USA and I have never had a single problem. I have stayed in Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon.

Rangers are always nice and helpful, park is as clean as I would expect it to be and I have only stayed in a handful of sites that were difficult to get in and out of.

SSSHHHH!! I've watched this state grow from approximately 2.5 to over 19 million. Today, with the snowbirds, you can hardly find a weekend site in a SP this time of year. Pretty soon he'll be down here and you and I will be camping at SPs in South Carolina during the winter where we can travel without reservations.

Uh Oh... I'm already here.

I understand that sentiment. As a native and lifelong resident of north Florida I loathe some of the things that have occurrred over the last 50 years.

We have stayed in only 2 private campgrounds in the last 4 seasons that we have had our camper. The first one was our very first camping trip with our first camper and if we had not been experienced tent campers we might have never gone camping again. The second private campground was a KOA we stayed in on our way to Key West, FL. Everywhere else we have stayed has been either a State Park, National Park, or an Army Corp of Engineers Park. These have always been cleaner, more spacious, nicer facilities and don't have hidden costs like pay showers. Furthermore, these parks have always been cheaper and we have stayed in Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Florida, Alabama, and Georgia State Parks. All of them have been identical in their facilities with a few minor differences. Additionally, these parks are general right on/in the middle of the natural attractions that we go camping to see.

So bottom line, public parks are a much better value for your camping dollar if you are camping to be involved with the natural surroundings where you are camping. As for security, I have left far more valuable items out over the course of a weekend in these campgrounds than I ever would at home and have never had an issue.

How can you call yourself "the Camper" and never stay in a public park campground.
don't consider staying at most private "parking lot" campgrounds to really be "camping"(KOA!)

been camping almost exclusively in state park campgrounds for nearly 30 years now.

We mostly camp in state parks along the east coast. Not once did I see anything about not being able to watch movies while staying there. You should have no problems, watch what you want.

Of course with all that nature around you, you might be tempted to leave your rig for a while, and enjoy some outdoor time....

And definitely don't go to Goblin Valley or Dead Horse Point in Utah. Uh-uh, you'll regret it.

Seriously, I look for NP and SP campgrounds first when planning our routes and they've all been tops. It's been the private ones that had kinda scary rigs that had been there for ages, were right along busy highways or had seriously bratty kids riding bikes through our chairs.

State Parks are so serene and scenic. Love them. Not scary.
