Good luck with your search!
Thanks everyone for the good advice. I agree it would be a hassle to buy and sell later, but renting is so expensive. Looking at cruiseamerica, if we rent a 23' for 35 nights, use the generator 6 hours a day and drive an estiamted 8000 miles the cost will be almost $9,000. Thats a guaranteed loss, whereas if I buy a used one and resell it I have a good chance at making back most of that money.
$700 a week though sounds much more reasonable. Are these private renters?
Could anyone recommend something besides cruise America for rentals?
Thanks,
Will
Yes, these are private owners. I would start with a Google search of "Virginia rv rental". Also look on Craigslist under RV's for sale, search using the keyword "rent". Search the big cities to get the most hits. I would even search Craigslist in other states.
Hope this helps!

Looks like a pretty good deal IMO. Here you go!

There are individuals who rent their rigs and lots where people have an agent display and rent their rigs for them. On an RV, tires deteriorate from sitting parked. After six years tires may look good, with no apparent tread wear, but they can come apart with steel belts trashing the bottom of the RV and taking out tanks, plumbing and wiring, maybe propane lines (fire!). An RV can be hard to control when a front tire blows out. (Don't hit the brakes, keep foot on accelerator and slow gradually. It's a good idea to replace old brake fluid and have brake system checked and serviced. Brake fluid collects water over time and cases "brake fade" on grades. The radiator, clutch fan, and all hoses and belts should be checked. The, generator, dash AC, roof AC, furnace, water heater and appliances are all expensive to have serviced/repaired/replaced, get independant estimates on any thing needing repairs or replacements before you buy. Spend some time on this forum reading advice to first time buyer threads, look at and test drive various RV's and get familiar with brands, models and floorplans. It's a lot like buying a home, or a truck with a small apartment in the back. They kinda drive like that too.

We just did a 31 day 8000 mile trip in our paid for MH. The actual cost was over $8000. The troll will collect the toll one way or the other.

Ask Snyder's to put whatever they promise you in writing. Snyder's will promise you the world to get the sale. Service after the sale is horrible. (this comes from me and several Winnebago owners in the area).

Will, If going the "Own It" route, given your age, you could be comfortable with just about any floor plan motor home. If I were you, I would consider something in the $15-$20k that would be easy to sell quickly. Do a search on Starflyte and Telstar. They are older (now cheaper) yet built well which helps assure you won't have issues with water damage as most older rigs in your price range typically suffer. Water damage is the #1 motor home killer, followed by simple neglect of every sort including abandonment, left to the elements and rodents.

That's exactly what we're doing, looking to keep it under $20k for ease of resell.
Do the starflytes and telstar's have stellar reputations? They look like they are fairly solidly built. However, I cant find many of them for sale. Could you recommend a good website that deals with used RVs?
Thanks,
Will

Those do look very well built. They seem to be mostly class B's though. They might be a bit more difficult to sell being less common IMO. That is, if you could even find one to buy?

In the end I would not over think the decision.
The first MH purchase often is going to be part of the learning process. Staying under $20K and going for quality is hard to go wrong for most has long as it can not have a negative impact on your life style should every thing about the purchase go south.
In 2007 we bought an OK 1993 MH for $8K. In hindsight buying in at $16K may have been wiser in a technical sense but it was just too great of a financial risk due to family and business cash needs.
Since we do must of the repairs ourselves it has been a great home and auto shop class project over the years for the kids. Now at age 14 the kids have skill sets well ahead of most 40 year old people.
Had I not been able to fix it or tell shops what/how to fix it the purchase would have been a personal and financial nightmare. They asked for the MH when they were nine and I have insured they did not forget that when it has needed attention.
Any advice on this subject is certain to come up short because we do not know your complete background/needs/wants.
I can tell you once you pull the trigger the 'learning' will start.
Kind of like the song where at 2 am the guy leaves the bar with a 10 and at 10 am he wakes up with a 2.
Some how in the emotional process of buying major issues can get over looked.
