If you don't want a 2500 then look for a lighter trailer.

In looking at your post, I deduct you have a sizable family (CC truck, bunk house trailer). All of that deducts from your capacities. The six speed transmission and 3.43 gears equates out to close to the same as the older 4 speed and 373 as far a capability goes. Your CC 4x4 will be quite a bit heavier than the EC 2x4 I had. We pulled a trailer with a empty weight of 5000, loaded to about 6500. While our truck handled our trailer, I felt it was maxed out, and wouldn't want to haul much more.

I think you're not looking at a big enough truck for the trailer you want. A 2500 with the 6.0 wouldn't burn that much more fuel on a 7 mile commute, maybe a couple gallons a week.

What you need to find out is the cargo capacity of the proposed tow vehicle. With any 1/2 ton, you will almost run out of cargo capacity before you get to a trailer whose GVWR is greater than what your proposed TV is rated to pull.

I've found that to be true for my F150. The yellow sticker on the door says I'm limited to 1496# of cargo. I have to substract the weight of DW and me, plus the hard bed cover I installed after I bought the truck. I must also substract the tongue weight and the weight of the hitch itself. The remaining number is how many pounds of "stuff" I can actually put in the pickup bed itself.

And depending on the tongue weight, you can get very close to the max cargo capacity of the pickup, before any passengers and other stuff.

Just my personal opinion, but I would forget the half ton and get a Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins with six speed manual transmission.
Then I would hook up and go camping, with NO worries!

is the7800# dry or loaded weight ? you have written both. If it is dry forget it trailer is too big. If it is loaded weight you will be on the edge, however their still maybe payload issues to consider.
In the end I think the trailer will be too big for you current truck.
Don't force the issue get right the first time. experience has taught me it always cost more to get it right the 2nd time

Agree with most. You will love pulling 8,000-9,000 pounds with 2500HD and 6.0 engine. You will not enjoy it with anything less.

Easy answer, bad idea.

More truck or less trailer.

Good luck.

You can do it safely as it will be within the truck specs, but you may not like the performance it gives. Your choice
