Not only does KOA do it, but some well below average campgrounds such as Mt Desert Narrows in Bar Harbor, ME somehow think they are resorts and charge the resort fee with absolutely no amenities.

Why don't they just quote a rate with all the fees added in. If you want to pay the rate, stay and if not you can move on.

Some hotels are doing the same thing, making it harder to compare prices (resort fees might be hidden on their websites).

X2.. Why don't people complain like this when Joe Blows RV park charges a resort fee.I stayed at two places in a row in Ca that charged a resort fee and the third didn't.But then they were $10 higher than the other two.
I have stayed at a lot of KOA's and have only found one we didn't like, but then we didn't stay there either.. OOppss, there was another one,but we had to stay there and it was the one at South Lake Tahoe. That was the price and not the amenities..Oh yeh, there was the little item about the slide being 1" from a BIG tree and we had to run the cable in thru a window and wait for the owners daughters friends to leave so that we could get into our site.Owners were nice about it tho,but the daughter and her friends were pure witches about it tho.Other than that, really tight roads around BIG rocks.

I'm told franchise KOfAs are required to submit a percentage of their camp fees in addition to their annual fees to Headquarters. Add on income such as 'facility' are exempt from the formula and are at the discretion of the operator. Thus they sidestep paying more to 'Corporate' .
I expect Mc Edees , Windys, Brrrger Something and any other franchise of any kind have a similar formula. Corporate owned locations likely have different structures.
Your cruise ship, recent Vegas hotel, flight to anywhere quoted you a rate, then added port, airport, baggage fees. You expect these and plan for them. Should you go to a franchise campground you should expect a uniformity of service and facility. That you do not use the facility is no reason to expect exemption from their fees of use. Remember that cruise? You didn't use the pool or midnight buffet and free wine, but It was there for you.

It's called a profit center, does that clear it up?

It has probably 25 years since we have stayed at a Keep On Adding!

But to be honest most of our camping is BLM in the AZ desert for the winter and at Forrest Service cc's in the mountains of WY, MT and ID during the summer.

KOAs do it
RV Resorts do it
RV Parks do it
Private CGs do it

Soon it will catch on and State/Federal CGs will be doing it.....if they don't get closed first.

Got ripped off at one KOA, will never stay at one again. Rates are over the top, and they're no nicer than most others.

Have tried KOA twice, one in NH another in Michigan. Both horrible for several reasons. Ok, I guess if you have little kids. Now a very last resort. no pun intended. well maybe.
