I have a 14 yr old Shurflo 2088-403-144 water pump that ceased to pump recently after the tank got very low.
The pump just kept running and I assumed it was due to low water. However it would not pump when I added water to the tank.
I took it off and apart and it actually looked pretty good. I did not find any significant debris and the one way valve at front seemed to spring well.I cleaned and reassembled it and tried to make it pump with a battery and hose and cup of water.
It would not prime and when I added enough water from above it pumped well.
When I put it back in the motorhome below water level it would not pump even though the filter was clean and water flowed thru hose from the tank.
I did notice some slight air leak around the head and motor assembly when I blew in hose inlet. I tried vasoline on the seal edges but it still would not pump. When I ran city hose water to the system the pump quit pumping so the pressure switch is working.
I assume it is time for a new pump head or valves or gaskets.
My question is should I just get the pump head assembly off amazon $54 or try to replace the valves and gaskets about$15. I have the time as we just returned from a month on the road and will be home several months.
Thanks in advance Roger /Nashville

I'm no expert but if you have a winterizing connection I'd try to add water to that hose with a funnel to be sure it is not a prime problem.

Roger, that pump has seen it's day. You can either repair it or replace it. I think you got your monies worth out of it. Buy a new one and FEEL good about it.

The wobble plate/bearing (whatever you want to call it) get tired on them some times. They don't allow enough movement of the diaphragm to work right. I'd replace the entire pump head though.
If I had to do that, it might be just enough excuse for me to spring for the newer style variable speed water pump... the kind that don't cycle on and off constantly when you aren't using much water?

If you open a faucet before you turn it on, it will probably pick up the prime and work just fine after that.

I think you should buy a new pump. I found a new one on EBAY for about 35.00. Look around.

Mind you, that pump is getting on in years. Might want to pick up a new one anyway, even if you only keep it for a spare.

Thanks everyone for the ideas and suggestions. I have been kinda busy and finally have some more to report. When I hooked it up with the outlet open and let it start to pump. Then hooked it up it pumped fine so I guess it was a priming issue.
However the pump continued to run. The flow was as good as ever. I tried adjusting the end pressure screw but it had no effect. When I tapped on the head it shut off. I did this several times so there must be a problem in the pressure sensor switch. I will report more later and again thanks for all the help with this. You guys and girls are great as usual!! Better get a new PUMP, first trip out in the boonies & next thing you know, no water, wifes mad & that aint no fun.
Lifes to short to try & make that little old pump work right. A 2.8 gpm is like 80 bucks from most all rv stores. E bays cheaper, but time you add shipping your right back to same as driving to get one.

Yes I probably will at least get the pump head although I have to admit the material those valves are made of is really good stuff and mine were still fairly soft and compliant even after all these years. Thanks and good trips. Roger
