People I don't even know are getting emails from me. Has my email account been hacked? It is a hotmail account on a Mac computer.

If it has been hacked, what do I need to do? Some of these emails are embarrassing, such as the one that asks "have you forgetten about me?' and some about vanilla and others about work at home.

sounds like it. just change your password for your hotmail account...the longer the better. throw in upper case, lower case, numbers and symbols...the more difficult the better.

Hello,

Unfortunately, it sounds like it might be.
I would suggest you login and reset your password ASAP just to be sure.

Do you have any mail client configured on your local PC (i.e Outlook, Thunderbird, Mac Mail)?

if your account got hacked there's a good chance that the password has already been changed so you cant in. if that's the case you have to notify hotmail and prove you are the owner in order to get it back.

Thank you for your replies. I have changed my password. Bryan, I don't understand your question, but I think the answer would yes. Now you see why I need help. I might call hotmail to see if they can help.

I am trying to get help from a member of the MUG (Mac User Group) locally, unless I can fix it first.

Thanks again.

Spammers routinely use a random email address of one of the recipients of their spam as the "From:" address. It usually peters out after a few spam runs when they switch to another random address to avoid filters. It's unlikely that your account has been hacked unless you've verified from the message headers that they are originating from your account. The "From:" address is easily forged.

We've found folks that get "Hacked" their contact list gets taken and resold to various spammers. Unverified emails go for about $.10 a hundred. Verifed as active can net a spammer as much as $.10 for each contact. Having the account of the "user" for spamming their list just makes it more valuable.
Sell the list a few hundred times and there's real money. Once the contact list has been stolen there's not much you can do to except change emails and notify all your contacts about the change.

Because I have two Macs, I called Apple and they said again, to change my email address which I have done, again.

The last email my dil received from "me" was pure porn. Many of my neighbors received emails from "me" with the addresses for our neighborhood email list. I don't know many on the list and hope that they don't feel they know me now.

I think I have figured out, almost, what happened. I loaned my rarely used pc to a neighbor and told them my password. They used the pc on an open wifi. I don't believe that that person hacked it, but how did someone get my password other than my neighbor?

Did this happen because of an unsecured wifi hookup?

Anyway, thank you all for your help. I hope that something as simple as changing my email password solves the problem.

My neighbors must think of me as the little old lady who watches porn.

If there is no evidence that someone receiving an email under your name that anyone has hacked your email account you dont need to worry. They will pass. There are too many programs that allow 'spoofing' of the 'From' address and sending to lots of recipients.

If you are also getting 'sent' emails under your name in a sent folder then that is a different problem and you need to fix it. That suggests someone is actively using your account.

Do you have any information to support this statement? Ive been wondering for years.
