Hello, friends. I'm considering either the Comodo or ZoneAlarm free firewall. Any user experiences with either? I'm currently using the ZA security suite but thought I'd try one of the free firewalls when my subscription expires. I'm also running Microsoft Security Essentials and feel that a free version of either firewall will suffice. Thanks....

Over the years I've alternated between Zone Alarm, Comodo, and Online Armor. All three are good with each one making a little bit more headway every couple of years. This past couple of years, I've used Comodo only because it seemed to interface better with Windows Vista. Online Armor could be a better pick in 2012 though. And I haven't moved up to Windows 7 as of yet. Good luck with your choice.

I have been using Microsoft Security Essentials and the firewall,(free) that comes with Windows 7 for about (2) yrs now with 0 complaints. I've previously used both of the ones you've listed before this and prefer Zone Alarm over Commodo. To darn many popups with Commodo.

X2 on the M S E. The best I have found. and I treat the rest like viruses.
I have been in computing since 83. Tried all of them.

I use Comodo after years of using Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm can become a pain when using a network- and can block communications with other computers on the network even when set not to. My experience with Zone Alarm is that whenever they update it, you have to start reconfiguring it. Whenever we had a problem with the network, turning off Zone Alarm fixed it. So we dumped Zone Alarm and started with Comodo. Comodo has its quirks also, but not as many as Zone Alarm. I have always found the Windows firewall since its introduction to be the worst and it is shut off as soon as I get a new computer or install Windows on a computer.

I've used both the free versions of Comodo and Zone Alarm(ZA). Currently using the free ZA on all my computers with no issues. I also like ZA ability to block writing to the hosts file.

IMO, Commodo is a step or two above the rest.
Long-time ZA (free) user here, and generally very happy with it. When ZA was causing my new Win7 machine to hang on boot, I tried other options.
First try was Sphinx Window Firewall Control, which is a frontend for the Windows Firewall, and very good (feels a lot like ZA). But only Commodo gave me the granularity of control that I sought.
For those that think Commodo is too difficult to use, if you downgrade the protection level within Commodo to that of ZA, it's no more difficult than ZA. Moreover, if you take it down to the level of Windows firewall, it's easier to use than Windows Firewall, while giving similar protection.
