We are considering a trip here mid June. Has anyone rafted here. Are there other things to do? There will be my BIL/wife and boys 8 & 10 yrs camping with us too. So that limits us to the middle rapids only. Is it worth driving 8 hours from Michigan just for the one rapid? The boys are to young for the lower rapids (they claim you need to be 12).
I understand there is the Laurel Caverns as well. Is there a amusement park nearby? Any nice campgrounds? I've looked at this website, just curious if anyone has been there. It's a bit of a drive, I just want to make sure it is worth the trip.

We lived in Pittsburgh for 14 years so I can share some things to do.
Ohiopyle has a fantastic bike trail that runs for many miles along the river. If you are not bringing bikes, you can rent them there. Close by is the Frank Lloyd Wright House - Falling Waters. I am sure the kids are not too interested but it is worth seeing.
Kennywood Park, which is a wonderful amusement park is on the east side of Pittsburgh and about a 80 minute drive away. It is an old fashion park with nice shaded picnic areas (bring your own food and drink). It would be a great place to go. If you like roller coasters they have some great historical coasters.
The Laurel Highlands has some nice hiking in the many state parks in the area. A day trip to Ligonier, PA is worth the time.
I hope this helps. If you have additional questions, PM me.

Google the Laurel Highlands and you'll find many opportunities for activities. Seven Springs Mountain Resort offers true four season activities for all ages, including a zip line, an alpine slide, and an elaborate sporting clays range. Smaller amusement parks include Caddy Shack (go carts, putt-putt, arcade games) on Route 31 near Donegal, PA, and Idlewild Park on Route 30 near Ligonier PA. On a more somber note, the Flight 93 Memorial is located near Shanksville, PA, a fitting tribute to the true heroes of 9-11. The Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail system begins in Ohiopyle and continues across these Laurel Highlands for 72 miles to Johnstown. There are several trail head sites throughout the region where you can access these trails for an enjoyable day-hike.

OK, I'm a bit biased since I live in the Laurel Highlands of PA. Have rafted both the middle and lower Yough many times. Even the middle Yough can be challenging depending on water Level conditions, so be sure to check with the local outfitters first. The bike trail between Ohiopyle and Confluence is very scenic with a very gentle grade. If you leave Ohiopyle the other direction you will be going down a much steeper grade and will need to return uphill.
Laurel Hill State Park is centrally located to the area attractions and in addition to the campground (electric hookup only) they have a great beach at the lake with pedal, kayak, and canoe rental. Also many ranger programs for kids as well as a free movie at the cg on Saturday night at the amphitheater which also has a small concession stand. Also Laurel Hill has may kid friendly geocaches if you are into geocaching. (Again I'm biased since I am the president of the Laurel Hill volunteer group)
Nearby is a small amusement area Caddieshak with miniature golf and a bunch of other stuff. About 30 minutes away is Idlewild Park that has a great water park as well as many amusement rides for kids under 12.
Laurel Caverns has geological programs as well as a large unlit portion of the caverns where you literally have to crawl through in places. Used to take my kids in there when they were small but beware you will get dirty.
Approx 15 minutes from Laurel Hill State Park is the town of Somerset. There you will find a Walmart, antique shops, and the usual bevy of restaurants. The above is just a few of the things to do in this area. I think you will find the Laurel Highlands both an interesting and fun place to visit.

We have not camped in the area but we have used the bike trail. It is one of the most beautiful scenic trails we have experienced and do plan on a return trip with the TT.
