I ordered my Tailgater and receiver (VP 211k) from Amazon. Since there is no installation involved, I was under the mistaken impression that I could just call Dish or go online to order the programming. The DISH people told me that I couldn't order the programming from them I would have to call a local retailer and there's only one in my city. When I called him, he acted PO'd that I'd ordered the equipment from Amazon, told me that the reciever would not have the software installed and I could bring it to him for updating but he would charge me $199.99 to set up my programming! All for 3 or 4 months a year of use. Am I stuck paying this guy to get my $30/mo. programming? There are 2 other dealers in nearby towns, I guess I could call them and see what they would charge to set up my programming. I've never had satellite before and while I'm sure there are some reputable dealers out there I was hoping I could avoid dealing with these retail business. Does anyone know of an alternative to dealing with the only local retailer here?

Can't help. Seems to be a common complaint when equipment is purchased from someone like Amazon rather than DISH or DISH reseller.
I purchased mine thru dishformyrv.com. Equipment arrived promptly. I connected it all up, called a phone number on the box, and it was up and running in about 10 minutes. No programming setup required. Just had to activate it.

amazon just passed the order along to a couple of close by dealers(well in the same state). I'll call the one who's sending me the receiver to see if they can help.
It just seems like a rip off to me that a dealer charges you $200 just to sign you up for service. I didn't read anything about this kind of situation on the blogs before I ordered the equipment, as a matter of fact I read several posts that said they ordered from Amazon and were pleased so if any potential buyers are reading maybe you can learn from this.

Call this number 1-888-309-0370 to get DISH to activate your receiver. I bought my VIP211K on Ebay and called this number to set up my account and activate the receiver. You'll learn that DISH C/S people are not very well trained about their product, especially when it comes to an RV account.

Try finding someone with a home account and hook the receiver up there so it can download the software. If you do that you will be fine and ready to use your new tailgater..

...and again.
I've purchased several receivers and DVRs from other than Dish over a span of11 years. As the OP said, I just called to activate and choose programming. No dealer involved.
Whenever you get an answer you don't like from Dish just call back and ask again. Eventually you'll get the answer you want.

There is no big deal about software, Dish downloads it. When I called Dish for the last receiver they tried to push off a local installer. So I asked them if the installer would follow me around to my different campgrounds and re-set up my dish. LOL. They have an internet site. I thought you could just sign up for it.
