Thanks for all the help in deciding to make the switch. Now I noticed there is a place for a 2nd battery in the truck. Why would I need a 2nd battery? Do I need to put one in?

Only driven the truck about 125 miles but I am averaging 16.1 mpg. 70/30 road to city driving.

Last, I have ordered some towing mirrors and a bed liner. Is there anything else I shold consider adding?

Thanks again. Once I figure out how to post pictures I will.

The second battery location is for the duramax. No need with the 6.0.

Great choice! The GM 6.0 IMHO is one of the best gassers out there right now. Just a good all around motor and TV combo. Congrats.

I am curious, did the truck not come standard with telescoping towing mirrors?

Thanks!

Good luck with the new truck! Is it a crew cab ? You make want to consider the underseat storage box...gives you lots of space to carry extra items on board and out of sight.

Your mileage sounds very good...long term i average around 14.5. 52,000 miles on my truck now, not one problem. Still have original brake pads too which is longest ive ever had a set last.

I'm not the OP, but I would like to know more about this storage idea. Any links?

Congrats! Which mirrors did you get?

I just picked up my 2011 and have been really impressed so far. I will do my first tow this month if the weather cooperates. Mods so far include Reese hitch, 7 pin bed plug, step rails, and window tint. Future mods are mirrors. After the mirrors I should be good to go.

These are the ones from GM, which is what i bought :

gm underseat

The crew cab one holds a a great deal and doesnt interfere with rear passengers. You lose the flat floor when the seat is folded up, so if that is a big concern you may want to pass -or- use it unbolted for easy removal which is what i do.

If you google chevy underseat storage you will find a few other options as well.

I don't know if GM still uses this feature on the newer trucks, but on older gas engine trucks with the factory camper package option, GM included a second battery, which was used to supply power to the camper, via the factory camper wiring kit. The second battery can be used to supply power to a trailer as well. Some years of Ford and Dodge trucks also included the second battery as part of the camper package option. Later model Fords do not offer a second battery with the camper package, so there is only one battery for all late model Ford gas engine trucks.

On diesels, the second battery is needed for starting the engine.

I have one as well. I thought at the time I bought it that it was a bit pricey but now I wouldn't be without it.

I had a 2002 Chevy 2500 6.0. It also had the location for a 2nd battery. I found out that a factory option to have a relay over there that would connect that battery only when the key was on. Supposedly this was used on some high end models to power the DVD players and such. I ordered the relay from my GM dealer. I installed it and used the second battery to feed an inverter in the bed.
