I put in a new stereo last fall prior to my September vacation. Planned to listen to a lot of book tapes. Once I was on the road, though, I discovered that by the time I turned up the volume enough to overcome the road noise the speakers started rattling and buzzing. Guess I need to put in new ones. So here's the question... Has anyone else put in new speakers under the dash of a Minnie Winnie on a Chevy chassis, and how much better is the sound? I'm wondering if I should buy some speaker boxes to put on the top of the dash so I can point them back toward me, as right now they slant toward the windshield. Would I gain some improved sound level that way?

Go find a wrecked Fiero, Miata, RC-7, S2000 or Infinity, they all had seats that had speakers built into the headrests, because the speaker is right behind your head it can be turned down a lot more to block other noise. Failing that find a way to mount speakers above the seat, again close to your head.

Sometimes I have trouble understanding the voices on my cab radio. Found that there is a EQ setting in radio that improves sound for talk radio. If you have not tried this. Give it a try. It takes all the bass out of the sound.

Change the speakers in the dash and add a small 100 watt boster and it should sound great.

What type of stereo did you install, with what kind of power output?

Does the vehicle have only in-dash speakers, or door speakers as well?

Either way, Crutchfield can help you configure speakers for the dash and/or doors.

Go here, Crutchfield Configurator enter your model year, G-Series for the Van chassis, and click on "Car Speakers". It wil bring up many options for speakers that will fit your vehicle (some with modification).

They will supply mounting adapters, wiring harnesses, and instructions.

However, they also offer this caveat with the dash speaker installation for your vehicle.

What you need to know about the Dash location:

* Use the factory speaker grilles.
* A speaker adapter bracket is required, and it's included free with your speaker purchase.
* This is a very difficult installation.

The sound should bounce off of your window and act as a deflector shield (for lack of a better term). Getting some new speakers might be a good idea if you have old paper cone style speakers. Couple of questions. What type of head unit did you put in? What was the wattage? if it isn't high enough when you turn it up louder and louder all that happens is distortion of the signal and you get all the junk noise and blow your speakers. Make sure the head unit is powerful enough to run your speakers or follow the suggestion of oldtrucker and get an inline amp.

Do you have sound backing on the current speakers? You'll want to make sure the sound you are wanting to producing is flowing in the proper direction (up towards the window) and not being lost under the dash.

Izasitko has a great idea about the speakers in the headrest, but thats a lot of extra wiring, and if those speakers go out, would be difficult to replace.
