Why people call proper training BS, is something I can't comprehend. Having been a LEO plus worked for the USFS and seen the aftermath of kids and ATVs, training is NOT BS. Hopefully more adults will come to the understanding that if we are to continue to ride on public lands, we must teach our kids to ride responsibly and be properly trained to handle the machine they are riding, which does NOT come from the internet.

Sorry for the rant, but some of the attitudes I have seen on this thread, are the reason we are losing more and more ORV trails daily.

I agree with Texan. Perhaps the people that are threatening not to go to Oregon are the very people that shouldn't be there in the first place.

Do these "hands-on" youth trainings have to be conducted in Oregon? The reason I ask is we have a trip planned to Winchester bay in July and I have taken the bloated online course (70 questions of a lot of the same stuff) but I am NOT going to spend an entire day of our four day trip having my kid sit through one of these.

Based on what I have read I have to do all of the following prior to our trip.
1) Take the online course (done)
2) Have my kid take a hands-on training
3) Register each ATV (believe its ~$10/each).

Talk about red tape... We are starting to re-consider if we really want to deal with all this BS and go elsewhere this summer.

I hope you still come to Oregon, the dunes are worth the trouble.
Number one is done.
Nunber two: I'd check but I believe they refer to the kids training that lots of groups and manufacturers offer in many parts of the country that would work for you. So you should be able to do this near home.
Number 3: is pretty easy, you can do it at so many ATV/MX stores, gas stations, etc...takes 2 minutes. The $10 for two years helps keep the OHV parks open for riding.

Also note that Oregon resipricates a lot of the license and fees with other states.

I promise the riding in Oregon is worth the trouble...

#2 If your kids have taken safety course it should count. Appears that approved coures ATV Safety Institute (ASI) – Class I and Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) – Class III both count or you can take one of the evaluation courses.

#3 if you are registered in CA you don't need to worry about buying an Oregon permit. Reciprocity info

If you are not sure about your Safety Course you can call or email.

What if your Bike/ ATV has a out of state OHV sticker already do you have to buy another one for every state you ride in?

Many states have reciprocity and don't require a special sticker, but there are some that want the money and say tuff, you will buy our sticker if you want to ride. Even though our state borders OR, the last I checked, OR did not honor our registration.

From the link I posted:

Oregon will honor off road permits from the following states:

Alaska
Arizona
California
Idaho
Illinois
Indiana
Missouri
Montana
Nevada
North Dakota
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
Utah
Vermont
Washington *
Wisconsin

* Anyone riding in Oregon is required to have an off road permit/decal for off road areas. This is a state law. Reciprocity is granted to those individuals who have a valid off road permit/decal. This is the only permit which we accept in our reciprocity agreement with other states. Washington's ORV permit will be recognized in Oregon. Dual sport motorcycles registered for "Dual Use" and displaying their license plate qualify under the reciprocity agreement.

http://www.oregonatvsafety.com/pageview_view.php?editid1=5
link to find resources for atv training..

http://www.oregonatvsafety.com/classview_list.php?a=showall
this shows all classes available.. Class

all of these are Thru the OSU- 4-H program. the classes run 2 to 3 hours total. Fee is per rider of $20.00 OREGON PARKS&REC pays the remaining $35.00 FOR YOU. There are classes available all over the state, and almost 7 days a week, depending on the area.Oregon ATV Safetytm - Youth Rider Endorsement Program plays an integral role in helping young (6 - 15 years old) ATV (4 wheeler)riders get endorsed so they can have fun and stay safe while riding on Oregon public lands. Attending a class does not guarantee endorsement. This is not a training class. It is a class to allow your child to demostrate his or her safe riding skills. Starting January 01, 2012, a hands-on endorsement and an operator's permit will be required by Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR) 736-004-0085 (2)(d), for anyone less than 16 years old.

4 wheeler ATV endorsement program limited to Ages 6 - 15 years. No Adult Riders.

The above comment on Reciprocity is correct.
