Hello all, I wanted to give a heads up to those who may come to oregon to Go atv riding, on your own, or renting one. Oregon is now requiring (2012) that all youth ages 5-15 to have a "endorsement" training course. there are many opportunities for youth to take these 2-3 hr. courses to get the endorsement. it requires all riding gear, and rider fit rules, and the atv that they will be riding.Oregon is "silent" to federal atv rules. ( cc to age of rider) Meaning a youth that physically can ride and control a 400cc sized atv for example, can ride it in oregon. Oregon also requires that all youth of these ages are supervised by an adult age 21 or older. Unfortuantely Im told if the youth dont have the endorsement, from oregon or another state that reciprocates, the ticket can be up to $128.00 per youth rider in violation.. I dont intend this to scare anyone or anything of the sort, I just want everyone to know ahead of time, when planning a visit or trip.
there are many classes available for training across the state.look for registration links online.
Take care and ENJOY LIFE !!!

Oregon is the biggest nanny state I have ever seen. We took a car trip to San Francisco during the Christmas break and stopped at Seven Feathers for some gas and I told my 17 year old son to go get me a Monster energy drink. He comes back empty handed and tells me you need to be 18 years old to buy an energy drink. Oregon is Friggin ridiculous with their nanny state laws. I won't bore you with the helmet laws and skateboarding at Fort Stevens. Apparently parents in Oregon are the dumbest people on the planet that can't be trusted to take care of their own children.

I think part of the problem is our governor is a former emergency room doctor.
Motorcycle drivers license laws are also becoming more strict with a multi day training course requirement. Back when I got my motorcycle endorsement there was only a 10 question quiz, not even a driving test.

Good information for travelers to Oregon wishing to ATV with kids.
Personally, I think if the training includes some stay on the trail/TreadLightly! education, then I'm in total agreement!

Thanks...I will have you know as a parent in Oregon I am NOT the dumbest person on the planet. Nice way to insult hundreads of great people. If you aren't happy coming to Oregon, then stay in WA. No love lost.

At least those people have jobs, and aren't on welfare. And while you are driving your 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 DRW in my lovely state of Oregon, feel free to pump you own diesel if you wish.........its legal for you to do.

youngtravelers - great reminder! We're heading to the coast for Spring Break again and taking one of my sons friends with us, reminded him last night to take the ATV course - though he's old enough not to need it, I require it.
We ride almost exclusively in Oregon and frankly I support the rules they implemented for their State. Nanny State? Sure somewhat when it comes to ATVs, however requiring a simple online course is not unreasonable to make sure that all children & parents know basic safety rules of riding. We had to do the same thing for our trip to Utah. One of the key things that Oregon did that other States didn't is to overrule the Feds when it came to the rideciously ATV engine sizing system. Instead, as already stated, your child can ride an appropriate size ATV based on their body and experience size, not based on the engine size. The Oregon ATV community was under immense pressure after another child was killed on an ATV who was riding without parental supervision. They fought hard for a balance approach as well as changing the sizing issue.
As for Energy Drinks and Gas, well that's another issue.

I think they are asking for more than the online course. It sounds like it is an on site on quad with full riding gear class.
We went to Dunefest last year and I made the whole family take the online course and when we got there we found that none of the rules we learned were practiced by riders or inforced by the rangers.

15 y o & younger Jan 1, 2012 needs an online course plus a "hands on training course" or an evaluation exam of rider skill. Also, anyone 50 on or after Jan 1, 2012 needs the online course completion.
A basic MSF off-road skills class meets Oregon requirements, too.
