folks buy a small class C or class A motor home (I would say something under 30 feet) and then tow a vehicle behind it? I would think that this defeats the purpose of owning a smaller motor home. If you're going to drive from point A to point B you are not using the towed vehicle. Once you get to point B and are staying a couple of days, either in an RV park or at a place like Walmart, why would you need another vehicle? Getting around sightseeing is a lot more comfortable in a motor home than driving around in a car, is it not? Also, on the open road, I'm quite sure that towing a vehicle brings your gas mileage way down. Now, I can see possibly towing a car with a large Class A (over 30 feet)(do they even make a Class C over 30 feet?). However, with a Class C or Class A, under 30 feet, driving in cities should be no more difficult than driving for UPS. Those drivers don't seem to have any problems.

Some people like the ease of manuvering a car rather than a small motorhome. Some parking lots can get a little tight. Plus, if you're at a CG with hookups, you don't want to unhook everytime you want to go somewhere.
That said, I have a 37' Southwind and don't pull a toad. Yet.

Set up.....level, electric, water etc. then Hey lets go see such and such
Parking downtown, parallel parking, pull in diagonal parking......all easier with a toad.
Smaller Class A, B, C allows one to utilize smaller, rustic camping spots (state/NF/older CG) and having the toad gets one more options.

I guess if I was camping in Cody, WY and wanted to sight see I could put a lot of miles on a vehicle. Suspect it might be better at 30 mpg than 9 mpg. Things are not quite as close out here as they may be back east. If they are full timing and just happen to be moving around they may not want to disconnect everything just to go to the local store and buy a loaf of bread. Of course not everyone just camps at Walmart.

To each his own.
I personally can't imagine going through the hassle of unhooking an RV every morning before we could go sightseeing and then having to hook it back up every afternoon. Or of trying to find parking for anything bigger than a Class B in a tourist or downtown area. It's WAY easier to pull a toad. And no, the mileage difference isn't very significant. When you figure in the extra fuel one would use when driving an RV for daily sightseeing, I doubt there's any "loss" of fuel at all by pulling a toad. Not to mention the peace of mind of having another vehicle in case of mechanical issues with the RV.

I happen to own a Fleetwood Jamboree 29V motor-home which I purchased in 2006. We traded in the 2002 Dodge pickup and a 30 foot Award Classic trailer. This size motor-home only takes 1.5 car spaces when parked in the downtown area of most towns. Because of the great mirrors it is easier to park than the last pickup and topper. The wife loves to drive it too.
I wanted to get away from the hassle of towing a trailer of some kind which I have done since 1967.
We use the motor-home for camping 50 to 70 nights every year. We see no need to tow a car along. The motor-home has no slides and takes about 5 to 10 minutes to pack any******outside and head out to a golf-course, restaurant, church, site-seeing, etc. We average 10 mpg when on the road.
I retired in 2007 and hoped to head south for the winters, but the DW and three
of our parents in their 90's and living close to us took care of that. My wife's dad died at 97 in July 2010, my mother at 92 in October of 2010. My wife's mother is 96 and still going strong.
If we ever get south we would rent a car down there for the duration. I agree with you 100%, but most will tell you otherwise.

I just found out why the service was down for maintence in early January. While spell check still does not work, evidently some 4-letter words are now replaced with "*****" automatically. Nice little feature.

HI,
I have hardly ever camped without a tow vehicle since getting one. When I had a truck with camper, then a TV would not have made sense though. With the class C, it was not able to tow a car, the chassis was to light, and the engine to small.
With my class A, I specifically wanted to tow something, and bought a Manx buggy first. The wire not wanting her hair messed up decided a Honda CRV would be on the next trip. I have a 30'11" RV, so I guess I fit into those who should be towing anyway.
Usually once in a campground, I don't want to move it to go sightseeing. And the car fits onto trailers such as Lake Edison and Big Creek Railroad trail that the motorhome would not want to take it on those dirt roads. Monument Valley is another example of places the CRV works great, the RV not so much. And driving around Moab, there are dozens of places to take the car, yet at 7 MPG, I would not want to spend the gas taking the RV.
And the 10,000 miles I drove the car sightseeing is 10,000 less on the RV, so it should last longer, and provide a higher resale value at some point.
I don't think that mileage was significantly effected when not towing. I could climb the mountain passes a little faster, and was not restricted to 55 MPH in California. I did take one trip from Lake Tahoe to Vancouver WA and back without the car, but had to return to pick it up before going someplace else.

We tried the no toad route the first trip we made with a class C and quickly found out what a pain in the rear it is to hook up and un-hook every day. Bought the Tracker almost immediately upon our return home and have never regreted it. It's been towed all over the West and South. I can't imagine our trips to places like Yellowstone, Zion, Destin without a toad.
