We are thinking about purchasing a new 40 foot diesel pusher, and are wondering what percentage discount from the MSRP we should expect from the dealer. In the First Time Buyer sticky, 26% is mentioned. Since that sticky was last updated in 2006, I am wondering if that percentage is applicable in today's market. We are looking to order from the factory to get exactly the options we want.

Thanks.

Instead of worrying about the percentage call the factory and get the price and spec sheets, send it to as many dealers as you can find. Take the lowest offer you get and use it to negotiate with the dealer of your choice.

Depends on the manufacturer but remember dealers are most likely to give you a better deal on a unit that is occupying a space on their lot. Price out a model configured with all your wants and then compare it to one in inventory that would be acceptable. If your experience is similar to mine, the dollars saved on taking one from inventory far outweighs the one or two wants you might not get. Use 30%, +/- 3% as your expected target for something off the lot. 25%, if your real lucky, for something ordered. Good luck!

In today's market I wouldn't settle for anything less that 30%. I realize that dealers have to make a profit to stay in business, but even with a 30% discount, they will still be in the black with it. Volume is the key today for dealers.

My 2 cents..

Dealers do not sell in today's market to have volume sales. As previously posted selling from stock will offer a greater discount then placing a factory order. The dealers overhead continues daily so why should he sell and not make a reasonable profit? There operation is not like a car dealer that has very high volume compared to RV dealers.

Carl,

I recently purchased a 2012 40 foot motorhome and found I got the best deal when ordering. I attempted to negotiate with dealers who had inventory and they didn't negotiate much. Just my experience. Call around to find the best deal. I found the best deal out of state and it was worth a considerable amount of money over what the local dealer offered. Send me a PM if you want more information.

I think you may be surprised at how aggressive the dealers may be on pricing a coach that's ordered, especially if they know your shopping it.
One it;s a guaranteed sale and to they know that they may only get one shot at it.

A dealer has no floorplan cost on a special ordered coach that is presold. So it's a let's try and get the sale attitude. If there too greedy go elsewhere. The price may not be as good as one that's been sitting on there lot for quite some time.

But when you put it out for tender they know they have to be aggressive to get it.

You might tell us the brand you are interested and you may get some suggested dealers. There is at little more to buying than the price. Follow up service can be real valuable. I haven't seen a rig yet that did not need things taken care of.

If you order from the factory you will probably not get a large discount. If you can find one on a dealer's lot that you like, then that is the best way to get a larger discount. New 2011's should be up to 30% and new 2012 should be about 25%. As stated above give us some info on brand and model. Also do a search nationally for the coach you are interested in to see other prices outside your local area. RVsearch.com and USArv.com are good places to start.

There you go! Easy process but I would add send via e-mail to dealers and get the quotes in hard copy. That's what I did and buying was a breeze.
