We have work camped for 13 years for state, fed and private. The only time a background check was run was for a national park that contained "Camp David". We normally use a passport for ID, if a paid position they need ss number otherwise no.

We volunteered at a Texas State Park last year for seven months. Before we were accepted they ran a background check on the two of us. We did handle large amounts of cash.

I would not stay at a place if I knew they did not ask for the information they are asking for. In my business you will get the same treatment and yes you will also pee in a cup.

Heck in today's world you can't even work at Wal-mart without a background check and a pee test.

Consider the liability of who they hire. Being around people and children. Sure don't want to hire a thef, rapist, or child molester.

It is also reassuring knowing that co-workers are not some sort of criminal. I have nothing to hide, never been arrested, and never been accused, so any employer can feel free to check me out.

The USACE requires backgound checks om all volunteers, this protects the public as well as the other volunteers. There have been some potential volunteers that were not accepted because of convictions mainly violent crimes
