OK this is our big plan. We are retiring in 3 years, and then we are taking the BIG 49 states in 49 months trip. But first we are going to take a month off and see the great state of Arizona for 30 days. We want to make sure our rig is what we want, it’s a Fun Finder 21WBS. I know a lot of folks will say it’s too small but for us it’s perfect. But my question today what’s the must see in Arizona. We have rafted the entire Grand Canyon and hiked the canyon so we have seen and done most of it. We have seen all the National Parks north of I40. Where are the out of the way things that you saw that we should put on our list. We also have a 20 foot tandem kayak that is good for lakes, no white water so we hope to do a little paddling. If what you list is near a city please list it so we can find it on the map and start laying out our trip. We do like hiking and seeing the out doors so that is number one on our list. This way we will have tested our plan and get to see a really neat state. We are only a day’s drive from AZ being in Colorado so we are planning on 28 days in the state. Also list the things we don’t need to see also. We will be doing it in Sept or Oct so it will be a little cooler, not sure we can take the +100 degrees. I am sure 28 days is not enough but its all we have for now.

two things I would like to see and that is the meteorite crater and the Grand Canyon. I would like to do a little gold panning or use a metal detector looking for some gold.

You must see Lost Dutchman State Park, and drive east thru Tortilla Flat. Stop at the Tonto NM. Very nice area. If you have the stamina, hike the Siphon Draw Trail at the SP.

I would second the meteor crater. Sedona is nice as well and I would also try to see Tombstone and the OK corral.

All of the posts and links before are great and should be followed up on but having been to and having seen almost all of these all I can say is X2 on seeing the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and staying close for at least a few days to explore all the view sites. There is far less crowding and the views can be savored. As most say after such posts is IMHO Have a great retirement and happy trails.

The above mentioned suggestions are good. But if you're at all into birding, hiking and wildlife and enjoy a quieter scene, you might enjoy the Chiricahua Mountains east of Tucson in the Coronado NF.

The first time I went to Phoenix, we went to the Botanical Gardens and to the Natural science Museum. I was impressed with both. I also went to another out door place, it was an out door museum displaying an early american settlement. Don't remember the name of the place.
