I think I have been waiting maybe three or four years to be able to make this post. Things have come together in such a way over the past six months that we are coming ever so close to our goal!

Our dream has been (and remains) to sell our house in New England and move to Florida to begin our new simple life of RVing full- time. I am currently putting full time effort into getting the house market ready. There is quite a bit of work to be done but we hope to have it on the market by Memorial Day. In the meantime, we are going to get an opportunity to have a taste of full- timing! Beginning in April we will be living full time at a nearby campground while I commute back to the house to work on it daily. Two months of full- timing! Can you tell we are excited?????

I think this two months will provide us with a pretty solid " dry run" into the world of full timing. If the Mrs. doesn't want to throw my stuff out onto the road after two months, we might be heading in the right direction. In addition to sharing our excitement, I certainly look forward to your thoughts and input. Maybe some tips and tricks, suggestions for survival, or examples of "don't make the same mistake I made" . Please share!

We did it somewhat similar to you- we moved into the motor home (although still on the property, rather than at a campground) while we finished getting the house ready.

Its a good way to shake down the living quarters, get the storage figured out and so on.

You WILL bring too much stuff on board- you know that, right? Especially clothes and shoes. Consider making a a private agreement with yourself that after that first year of full-timing, if you haven't worn it, sat on it, cooked with it, used it to drive a nail, watered it or put flowers in it- you can safely get rid of it.

We hope to do the same, but real estate needs to take a turn for the better first. Congrats on your new venture!

Sounds like a plan to me! Go for it. In our previous life we had plans to buy 40 acres of land, subdivide it to 10 acres each, build a house every 2 years and live in our 5'r between houses. We put the deposit on the land and were using the new to us 5'r for vacations, when we discovered we never wanted to come home every time we took the 5'r out. Plan B! Sold the house, sold some stuff, gave some to the kids, put some in storage, oh yea, quit the jobs and hit the road. March 9 will be out 6 yr anniversary, no regrets.

When DW and I FINALLY settled down into our FT lifestyle is was...

Exciting for the first few nights, then
Exciting for the first few weeks, then
Exciting for the first few months, then
Exciting for the first few years, then
.....
.....
.....
Only time will tell when the excitement wears off. One thing will never wear off for sure... our gratitude that all things did come together for us to enjoy this lifestyle!

Best of luck to ya going forward..

We started out with way too much stuff and have spent the last year thinning it out. These things included a washer dryer(Worthless and heavy),generator(did not use in 5 years and heavy)2 Scooters(unreliable and heavy)All the heavy and uncomfortable flexsteel furniture was replaced with nice leather household furniture.

Congrats! I guess the only piece of advice I have it to remember that you can buy stuff as you travel, so don't think you need to buy everything now, then not use it. See if you really have a use for "RV-y things" before buying them - saves money, space & weight. Also, RV & FT the way YOU want to - don't feel as if there is a "right" way and try to live someone else's dream/life.

Have fun!!

just don't buy the rv toilet paper. Expensive and not necessary. :-) We buy septic safe tp. Works fine.

For our long trip this year, I packed all of the food in my s&b kitchen. We do not need this much food in the RV. There are stores everywhere and I like to buy fresh local produce and seafood (when on the coast). My food buying habits (keeping months of food on hand just in case) simply have to change.

I love our w/d. Yes, it is a PITA sometimes. You do small loads. I used to get bad wrinkles in the clothes until I figured out to use the colder temp settings. Problem solved. I throw in a load in the am before we go outside, and in the evening too. Works great.

We do not use our generator often, but there are instances where we need it and are glad to have it. If you do any boondocking or wallydocking on the road, it is nice to run it and have air conditioning and microwave.

Be aware of the weather - wind and thunderstorms mean stow your awnings. They can rip right off. For simple showers, lower one side of the awning to allow rain to flow off.

Learn to (if you don't already) cook your veggies in the microwave. They come out much tastier that way.

Learn to use the microwave and convection oven. Why use your propane when you are paying for electric in your hook-ups already? (does not apply for snowbirds who stay a season and pay electric seperately).

and last of all,

You Gotta Wear Shades. :-)
