The bars in the thing kill ya. Are there any tips or secrets to modding the thing to make it better?

Easiest and cheapest way I can think of is to add a layer of egg-crate foam cut to fit. For more money, you can purchase a correctly sized piece of memory foam from a matress store or cosco.

My sofa bed came with a built in air bed with built in pump. Very comfy. I'm betting you can remove your old bed and add this. If the matress is part of the stuffing for the conch when it's closed then leave it and add the air bed on top. Buy a nice one like the Areo Bed.

Did some more searching and found the AirDream bed. I think that might be the way to go.

now this is just a suggestion. have you though of the ad on the info tv that shows two sumo wrestlers sitting on a couch and it doesn't sag. they put some slats under the cushions and they hold up to 1000 lbs. they also show them putting them on hide-a-beds. just a thought

I'm inclined to think the fellas' at Cedar Creek had some method in their madness when it came to our pull-out couch,it's reminiscent of the medievel rack so's not to overly promote extended stays! I agree with ole' Nate Herreshoff who once said "The perfect boat sleeps two, dines four and entertains as many people that can stand on the deck and not fall overboard"!

A couple of thick down filled sleeping bags can make anything more comfortable to sleep on. Foam egg crate type material is also easy to store, and will pad the sleeping area.

We added the foam and also some more springs. In my opinion, there are only about half the right amount of springs on there from the factory. I found a few at a local hardware store but I think I still new about half a dozen more. I not in much of a hurry tho, I like having the camper all to ourselves.

What you need is a strip of thin plywood under the mattress across the full width of the bar. This spreads the load so the bar doesn't dig in as much.
