Can anyone tell me this is usually a pretty safe drive weather wise in early March. Don't have chains or much snow experience. Thx

In general, no, it is still very much winter in the areas you would be traveling through and to. Early April would still be dicey.

Watch the weather channel. Also google the city you want to arrive in...the website might have a "general" weather pattern for different times of the year.

Hi,
You may have trouble finding a campground that is open, and especially one with sewer and water hookups. What is your destination?

We live in that region. I can tell you early March is still considered winter in these parts even though we will start having some warmer temps--our early spring snow storms can be wicked. That's calving season for most of our area and without a doubt we generally get some nasty weather for the little ones to be born into. We got caught out on the road in a spring storm coming back from the southwest in mid-March--had to stay in Denver an extra 4 days because of a foot of snow. Snow is possible until into May.
Spring storms are especially messy because the temp is so unstable allowing melt, freeze, remelt, refreeze...ice and slush. Deep winter snow is usaually powder dry but spring snow is heavy wet and hard to deal with. However spring snow will melt quicker...the downside--the ground is still frozen so the water has no where to go but to run creating flooding situations in low areas, in streams and rivers so all this slushy/icy mess stays on top of the ground--beware of that.
However if you watch the weather forecast constantly you should have fewer issues and I'd stay out of the mountains. Choose a more southerly route like across southern AZ, NM, into El Paso then turn north through eastern CO then on through our area into SD. Be prepared to sit out a storm somewhere along the road for a day or so.
Also be sure you have a full tank of propane for heat. Really warm weather won't get to us until June!
I agree with anther poster about finding campgrounds open with fullhook ups until "real" spring. Call them ahead of time to see what will be available. Most parks will be open with electric only and many times their shower houses and laundry will be shut down also. Some actualy lock up thier waste tank dumps. That will mean you may have to plan to keep your onboard fresh tank full and your waste tanks empty.
You did not mention what part of SD you'll be going to. SD has several different types of weather regions. The western part is more arid and the eastern part is more humid...both of which will still be iffy in early spring.

For South Dakota, the latter part of April would be my earliest arrival date...Dennis

The trip is to register vehicles and get drivers licenses. I beleive there is a mail drop company with hookup. Just need to be a quick in and out trip. Will be working April-September.
Would September be better?

March is do-able. People do live and work in that area, just have to watch out for storms. Try to catch the tail end of one and you'll generally have a week or two between storms.
September would be much better if you can wait that long. Should be hot and dry at that time.

Jim, America's Mailbox has a campground with full hookups. They also have rooms for rent if you would rather fly in and out. They will take care of your license plate issues now. You don't need to be present. You will, however need to spend one night in beautiful South Dakota to get your driver's license. If you have an Az license, you simply surrender it to the licensing bureau, fill out the paperwork, get your picture taken and you're on you way with a spankin new license in your wallet. No test, written or driven. It took Debi and I about 20 minutes, start to finish to complete the process. Coming from California we were astounded! The only hitch is if you need handicapped plates. If that's the case you will need a form filled out by a SD doc and present it to the County treasurer. They will then mail the plates to you. Keep in mind that every county has their own rules regarding fees. Some are cheaper than others. We chose Pennington County because they are the cheapest. We transferred the vehicles over two years ago, changed our voting, address, banks etc at that time. We then wandered to SD this year for our DL, in August. (just make sure you miss Sturgis Week... ) Give America's Mailbox a call @605-718-1234 they can give you all the correct information. Let me know if you need any more info....Dennis

We use My Home address in Emery SD, they do not have a wheel tax in the county. They have been very good. There is no minimum monthly charge or required mailings. Just another possibility. Bert
