To date, I have towed our 27 ft TT with three Suburbans:

1. 1/2 ton, 5.7, 4-spd, 3.42
2. 1/2 ton, 5.7, 4-spd, 4.10
3. 3/4 ton, 6.0, 6-spd, 3.73

Their pulling ability was not all that different. Vehicle 1 and two would almost never hit 4th gear, unless going down a good hill. Going up a mild hill would often give you second gear in both. With vehicle 3, what is different is that it's gear 4 (not 5) that you are stuck in for most of the time. I think 4th is even a little lower than 3rd on the 4-speed vehicles. Kind of dissapointing- I wish there was a gear that gave about 3000 RPM at 65 to 70.

Must not be that much difference in HP and torque, and in some instances, similarities in final gear ratios.

I don't want to say there's zero affect from any of these variables- but it has not been of much practical significance.

What is different is the performance of the suspension- instead of being seriously squatted, the TV takes things much more in stride. (Yes, the WD was used and adjusted for all setups).

After reading all the posts I feel good that 6.0 guys are getting the same mpg as my 8.1.

I am looking at replacing my 2000 1-ton crew cab that has a 454. I was debating 8.1 or 6.0. But my 454 gets better mileage (12 to 13 mpg solo) than the 6.0's according to these posts. Glad to hear the 8.1 is about the same. I also hear that the 8.1 comes with the Allison transmission????
