Steve, I never saw Joe Pa smoke in public, but is it possible that he smoked cigarettes privately? I had two very good friends that had lung cancer and both had quit smoking years ago, but it was the chemo therapy that did them in! There is no way I would ever do chemo therapy!!! Never! Bags.

Bags, Don't know if he smoked but I know of a few people that got lung cancer and never did smoke. My friends mom for one. I suppose the the chemo and radiation therapy he had going on took it's tole along with the rest that was going on in his life. Chemo, yeah that's something I probably would put on the back burner as well. Steve

I refused to take chemo therapy three years ago and I'm glad about that! Did (8) weeks of intense radiation therapy 3 1/2 years ago and that didn't work. Now I'm doing (8) months of hormone therapy and that works for me! Bags.

He is old enough that he may have been in rooms filled with smoke during before and end game interviews etc that 2nd hand smoke got to him in the end. OR he smoked when younger, quit and this still caught up along with the 2nd hand.
He was a great coach, just too bad at the end, he was brought down as he was. Between the lung cancer, Sandusky etc, for him, he's probably in a better place.

Thanks Moderator. I live in PA and there is enough Sandusky on the news to choke a horse.

You hear of a lot of people who never smoked yet they get lung cancer. Dana Reeves, wife of Christopher Reeves comes to mind. I too wondered if the stress of the last couple months may have worn down his resistance. Guess we'll never know.

Here in PA quite a bit of the state consists of geology that emits radon, which has been linked to lung cancer. As said before, we will never know.
