Maya is pretty laid-back and loves riding...I keep her on a harness (secured to something in the car), but honestly, I would trust her without it. When I pulled my old TT with a regular-cab F350, she usually rode on the centre of the seat.
Briza didn't like riding unless her "rescuer" (Maya) was with her. Alone, she would alternate yowling at a pitch and volume worthy of ten Siamese with spastic fits, occasionally enough to knock the carrier over. However, she would curl up against Maya and be totally calm the entire ride. (Cats...)
Vierna was the toughest. She's a high-energy, high-strung cat. She doesn't seem to have a problem with VEHICLES per se, but went nuts in a carrier until Liz hit upon the idea of acclimating her by putting her food in one. It worked, took about a month. She doesn't like the big one (our largest cat, Maya, is 28lbs) we have, preferring a tiny shoebox-sized thing barely big enough for her to stand up in. (Cats!)

Well our son's kitty which is only 6 years old and laid back is going on the move. The other two kitties will most likely have new home here in California before we leave.
One is already going to a wonderful home of a friend who is a airline attendant. She has a very nice home in the Sierra gold country of California. The one I'm struggling with is my 16 year old Balinese kitty named Teddy. He needs a loving home. He's got a little arthritus, otherwise he's doing fine. I'm really bonded to him.
Hope and prayers that I can find a home for him where I will be at peace when we head back to Ohio to start a new phase in our lives.
We will probably be staying with our son and daughter in law out there in Waterville(Near Toledo), and then look for a home while out there.
We are drastically downsizing our furniture/belongings as we need to keep our moving expenses very low, and will have to store much of our belongings until we find a home.
Our son and daughter in law and 2 grandkids who have lived with us are also moving with us as California is just not the place for them to get a start at having that home for their family. Son is in construction and daughter in law is a very talented hard worker who is looking for an Admin job out in the Toledo area.
They are lining up an apartment in the Maumee/Holland area at this time as we are moving by the 1st of March.
Why? Need to conserve what money we have, and let our home be empty'd and put on the real estate market in March. Hopefully our home will sell quick enough before our funds run-out.
Reason for the rush?: Wife worked for the ciy out here and was a very hard working person. When the governor out here shut down all city redevelopment money my wife got "bumped" from her job by a person who was losing their job in "redevelopment". My wife didn't work in redevelopment, but hadn't worked as long as this worker who held the same position/title and had more years of work with the city. This lady had the choice of being laid-off or bumping my wife from her job. What does one do in this tough economic times?
Anyway we are trying to look at this as a "blessing" in disguise, as we will be living closer to our youngest son, his wife and two brand new twin grand babies. In addition our middle son and family are moving out their too. Oldest son and family are in Iowa, so we will be closer to them.
I'll miss California, but like the little plaque that my wife used to have in the kitchen, "A House Is Made Of Wood And Glass, But A Home Is Made Of Love." is what we are going on. Home is where you put down your stakes and enjoy the presence of family and friends. We will be leaving a lot of friends, but are looking forward to meeting and making new ones in Ohio.

crates and sedation is what i would recommend, whatever the vet recommends for them and 2 ounces of ethanol for yourself at the end of each day..repeat as needed.
typically cats only get into the car to goto the vet. unpleasant ride with a stranger pawing them afterwards.

We travel with 6 cats. We use Everclear cat litter (no smell from the cats or the litter).
We taught the cats to come to us by whistling and some good treats. They've never tried to get out of the RV, but I did let them loose in the back yard (once for a test) and did the whistle and treat thing and they came arunnin'.
We've traveled with them since they were kittens, so they are pretty used to travel.
I tell people that the cats demanded a 40 footer for their comfort. People think I'm lying, but all of you cat people know it's true.
This summer, I will have to move from Oklahoma to Maryland, taking with me: 3 horses, 3 cats, 4 dogs, a horse trailer, a 35' flatbed trailer, a 45hp tractor + implements, a Kia. All with 2 tow vehicles and 2 drivers. Somebody's gotta double tow. At least the 43' toyhauler and the smart car are already in MD.
Cats will be transported in the tack room of the horse trailer - 24/7 access to food, water, and litterbox.

....Which is why your location shows as Alaska? I don't even wanna know! But.... you do need to see about a reality TV show for this.

You know, there's really quite a lot to be said for having your life turned upside down!

I am a "temporarily displaced" Alaskan! My DL and residency is still Alaskan, and the original plan was to be moving back to Alaska in 2013 to retire and stay for good. The US Air Force has thrown a bit of a loop in those plans, so we will be wandering around the lower 48 for a few more years than planned.
But I cannot bear to loose the Alaska identity, as it is the only place I truly feel is "home".
The final move to Alaska will be even more fun, as it will also include a small herd of Dexter cattle, in additon to everything else. We can't take them to MD because of zoning regs - we can't find a property with enough acreage to allow them. So they will have to stay behind in Oklahoma.
