I've had and used a cpap since 2000 and I can't/won't be without it. The last few months I've been waking up with a very dry mouth. At first I did not have a humidifier and no problems. Then a passover humidifier and no problems. Now a heated humidifier and sometimes I get the very dry mouth and sometimes not. I've messed around with the amount of heat including turning it off. Can't seem to totally get away from the dry mouth. Ideas? BTW, after all this time I now have the best mask I've ever had. It's smaller and more comfy. CANNOT use cannulas or pillows.

Do you use a chin strap?
CPAP user since 1997 and no problems with dry mouth until about a year ago. I had a neck nerve pinch and started sleeping on side more than back. As I slept, my lips relaxed just enough to let air blow out and create very bad dry mouth. No dry issues after the chin strap. I think my mouth stayed closed better on my back. Randu

I agree, sounds like you're sleeping with your mouth open. Chin strap should fix that problem.

What mask are you using? for the past three years, I've use the resmed escape II cpap w/humidifier and the resmed Ultra full face mask. Prior to that I tried at least one other machine at probably a dozen different masks.

I have a chin strap and it does not work. It will hold your mouth closed but not your lips. I have serious dry mouth problems that can be so severe that it feels like you burned your mouth with hot coffee. I use the heated humidifier and have a Resmed mask. All that I find that works is shipping tape. Taping your lips together can seem a little bit of a problem but it works. Be careful removing it as it will take skin if not done right. When it is painful enough, you will try anything!!!

If you are using a full face mask you may have a leak around the seal. I have had my humidifier turned up so high I got water in the hose and almost drowned lol lol... But found I was getting air in around the mask and it was giving me dry mouth.. readjusted the straps and that fixed the seal..

Rrugg,

Check out the website below. It is a very active website and offers a lot of support. I also use a CPAP and full face mask. I'm a mouth breather and my mouth gets very dry. Biotene is a product that provides moisture to your mouth. There are other things that you can do and depending on your machine, you can adjust the humidifier settings manually rather than having the machine read the moisture in the room. If you decide to tape your mouth shut, most people recommend painters tape. Also, be careful of surgery. It usually is a short term solution. My brother had it and it was of little help and the sleep apnea worsened over time. My brother-in-law had a surgical procedure and had his epiglottis (sp? It's the flap of skin that hangs in the back of your mouth) cut back and it was botched and he developed scar tissue that now causes other problems. Just my .02 cents.

Hmmm....a heated humidifier in an rv? How are you guys doing this. Nothing we've used has enough power...?

I use a full face mask (Mirage Quattro) and it works great.

Suzeee,

I usually stay where there are hookups or don't use the CPAP with the humidifer turned on. Many people use a battery pack unit but again that humidifier uses a lot of power. If you do a CPAP search here, there are some good solutions to boondocking with one. Also, CPAPtalk.com has some good threads on this topic.
