In our 2003 Itasca Sunrise we have the typical TV set up in the center overhead between the driver and passenger seats. There is an old VHS player in the separate compartment to the right above the passenger's seat. I want to replace it with a DVD player.
When I follow the old VHS power cord it goes through a circular hole to the left side of the compartment and appears to go behind the big/heavy/CRT TV. Is there an easy way to unplug the old unit and plug in the new one? I would really hate to try taking that big TV down just for that. What do you think? Anybody familiar with that set up? Thanks.

Do you have an access panel at the back of the cabinet where the crt tv set is located? This is normally the case. If so just remove the panel, reach your hand into the space, remove the old cable and attach the new.
If you do not have an access panel. How about enlarging the hole the existing cable goes thru so you can reach thru to the crt tv to remove old cable and attach new?

I didn't see an access panel, but might have missed it. I'll check again. If not, I like your idea of enlarging the hole.
I also thought about using this as an excuse to replace the TV with a flat screen. (Lame I know, but I like the new ones.) LOL

I'd just cut the cord (turn the power off to the MH) and splice in the new power cord... Or cut it off and put an outlet on it as there's never seems to be enough outlets up there.
A lame excuse is better than no excuse BUT I have a better one as I doubt your old TV will turn the new digital signals.
I've been fighting this problem and though I had it solved by getting a VHS/DVD recorder with a ATSC tuner to replace my VHS/analog tuner. Naturally after the warranty has run out the new one will not tune the TV channels. Even though I have a 32" Plasma Monitor, I've just bought a 40" LED TV that is only 1.5" thick and I'll mount it outside of the opening for the 32". This will let me get rid of the $150 VHS/DVD/ATSC tuner BUT the new TV does not have video/audio inputs so my switching unit will not work with the new TV. May just use it to switch the audio BUT my DirecTV receiver does not have componet output so......... Sheeeze, it's never easy.

It's really not that big of a deal to take the TV out. There are usually some screws that remove a cover plate and some sort of blocking system to keep the TV in place. You didn't mention the size, but the typical 19" TV doesn't weigh all that much. You could always ask a neighbor for help.

Ivylog, I like the way you think. You can never have too many electronic toys. We had a 37" flatscreen mounted on an articulating mount in the hallway. We strap it tight when driving and we unfold it to face the front of the coach when we're parked. It's better high def and clearer than my home set when it's on the satellite from Dish. Love it.
I think it is time now to ditch the old CRT and try to fit a new one up there too. If I do that, I'll be sure to put in more power outlets in those compartments.

I agree with the others, it's time to buy a new LCD or LED. You might even get a deal where they throw in a Blu-ray player FREE.
In October, we replaced a 40" LCD with a 46" 3D LED that fits in the same space and got a free 3D Blu-ray and 2 prs of 3D glasses. Because we upgraded to HD receivers, we connect both the BR and DirecTV HD receiver via HDMI cables.

On my Winnebago there is an opening about six inches high that goes across the back at the bottom rear of the TV cabinet. I have to get up on the dash with my back to the windshield to see it.

If it is a 27" CRT like the one in mine it is HEAVEY
I took mine out for much the same reason, removed the old VHS installed a dvd and ran an S Video cable instead of coax to the tv, along with the audio. (The old tv has S video, suprised me) Also installed a converter on the input antenna coax so we can watch the new digital signals.
Taking it out was not a problem, removed the facing by removing 8 screws holding it on. Then removed a cross brace at the top of the tv, four screws. Then two little blocks on the left and right bottom front of the tv, you have to feel around on the top of the blocks to locate the screws, they were below the covering, phillips type, (All). Then make sure that you have someone to remove any wires as you expose the back of the TV.
Make sure that you have designated a place to sit it. Remember most of the weight is toward the front and if you sit it on a couch with the face out, it will be in the floor, on its face, oops time to get a new one
Our TV was a BEAR to lift back up into the opening. I'm 6 ft and weigh 205, and am in fair shape for a 67 year old soon to be 68
It took all I could do to get it back up there, also you have to make sure that the coax and cords are long enough so you don't have to try and balance the thing while screwing in or connecting wires, don't aske me how I know Also, make sure that no wires or coax is under the tv when you slide it back in, very important.
I would suspect the set weighs around 45 to 60 lbs, (just ran it on a search engine and turned up 60 to 90 LBS, I was a little low) sure felt like it, it is a panasonic 27" so somebody can look up the specs on it.
We too are going to replace them with much lighter flat screen LED/LCD tv's in the future, but not at this time. Have to save money to fill the tank BTW, for the cost of one tank of fuel, 100 gallon tank, you can buy a really nice flat screen at wally world
On second thought, don't know if that's funny or not. I deleted my comment after I wrote the first part of that sentence
Anyhoo, it was a struggle but I won, won't do it again until time to chunk the CRT. Man look at all that weight you could take off the coach hmmmm, can I sell this to the DW..... later

Hey Jim,
I only have one arm (amputee) so the TV weight is a problem I'll have to have someone else lift. I can lift them, and have, if they are at waist level, but where this one is, the best it could be is a semi-controlled fall. The more I think about it, the more I want the flat screen. I want it to look seamless and factory installed, so I imagine some carpentry work will be involved to make it look nice. But, I would LOVE to get rid of that big old weight above our heads when we're tooling down the road. (One more little lame excuse - talking myself into it.)
