We have just rented our house and hit the road. We currently have our mail forwarde to a relative. I have read some about the different mail services. My question is... Do you change your address to the mail service for driver lic., vehicle reg., insurance, etc.? Or can I retain my current address and get it forwarded permanently?
Thanks

You own the house that you are renting out, right?
Unless you think you can save some money/taxes/etc. by setting up a residency in a different state, I'd just stick with what you have now...why bother changing everything?

Is the renter forwarding your mail or the post office? I would think it would get confusing for the post office as to what to deliver to renters (same address) and what to forward to you.
Interesting keep us updated as it might give me more options in the very near future.

No, you cannot keep your current address and have the mail forward permanently. At least not unless your renters are willing to do the forwarding, since the USPS will not. If you prefer to keep your address in the city and state where it currently is, then you may be able to use a local mail forwarding service address, such as those offered by UPS Stores and other private forwarders. You would still have to change the addresses for your drivers licenses, vehicle registrations, etc. Keep in mind that by becoming a full time RV'er, you have moved your residence, just as assuredly as if you had sold your house and bought another one in a different location. A major benefit of fulltiming though, is that now you have a choice of where you want your "virtual residence" to be, allowing you to take advantage of the income tax and other benefits that other states may have that your current state does not.

Our driver's license, auto plates, etc. are residency listed as our daughter's home. We have a mailing address also which is a post office box which we have always used as a mailing address. That has worked for us for 7 years and hopefully will continue to work for us.
Our kids also use the post office box for certain items, so it really is a "family" post office box.
PS: either of our daughers forward our mail for us when we are out of the area ..

The USPS Post Office Box is the cheapest way to go, unless you have friend/relative whose address you can move your mail to. They could then package your 'good' mail and send it to you as needed.
By th by... Make sure you notify the city, county, state, as to your Mailing address for anything to do with your Real Estate holdings. Otherwise they will send it to the rental house proper, from which you may or may not, get it.
Permanent Forwarding Orders to the PO are only good for 12 months, after which your mail will be returned to 'Sender' with an address correction, for 6 months,, after that it will be returned as Not Deliverable as addressed... Unable to Forward.
I think this is still current info/ I retired almost 3 years ago... so maybe not. Go to USPS website to confirm. clicky
Do enjoy your travels.
Wish I'd retired sooner.

When our mail forwarding gets messed-up is always the USPS. We have all our important items sent to our mail service on a permanent basis, sure has cured a lot of important documents dissapearing into never never land.

I would use Escapees. As a Matter of Fact, I will be doing that in a Month or two when I start full timing.

The first question is, how long do you plan to live as a fulltimer, and do your relatives plan to be a permanent mail service for you? If not, then what will you do about an address for your driving license? There are only a few states that accept a mail forwarding service as an acceptable address for driver's licenses or vehicle registration, and I don't believe that PA is one of them. You will need something that will serve for that purpose.
I suggest that you may want to consider a change of domicile in order to solve this. There are three states that are most popular with fulltimers as domicile and they are Texas, Florida, and South Dakota. They are popular because they all accept mail service address for driving licenses, vehicle registration and insurance, none of them have any state income tax, none have and time period which you must spend in the state in order to be accepted as having moved there, and all have very reasonable costs to register vehicles.
The leader of the three is Texas, mostly because it is home to the Escapees RV Club, which is the only complete support organization for the fulltime RVer. They can supply mail forwarding with an address that has been tested through the courts and upheld, and it is also legal for all purposes in the state. They also have 19 RV parks around the country that members can use for very reduced rates, they have an excellent magazine, and a host of other services for the fulltimer. I strongly suggest that you take some time and check them out. Texas has won the RV Friendly State award from Good Sam multiple times.

The maximum that they will forward mail is six months and your renter probably would not be happy with their mail all being forwarded to your mail service!

If you choose to change your state of domicile, there are pros and cons associated with all the possible choices. We are Escapees members but have established residency in South Dakota and use a mail service there. Escapees is a great organization, but membership in it does not require one to use the mail service or be a Texas resident.
