Actually I enjoy a lot about Detroit. I have been talking about a Lafayette Coney Island from downtown for the past 2 weeks.
I was going to mention Detroit also. I just watched a program on Detroit and it's history etc. quite scary really. Half ghost town and half Islamabad.

The best books on the subject you will ever find are written by Lambert Florian. The Western Ghost Town series.

I've been to 2 semi ghost towns that have been started back up and both are in Western Arizona. One is in Oatman, AZ. and the other is about 10 miles east of the Parker Strip, I can't remember the name it has a restaurant and bar that opens up on weekends there.

Try this. Ghost Towns of Arizona by James E. and Barbara H. Sherman. This is a fairly old edition and may be out of print. Check
on Amazon and see if they have it.

I like Bodie in California off Hwy 395. It is a ghost town that is maintained in a state of arrested decay. It is now a state park. It looks like the people have just walked away yesterday and left everthing behind. There is canned food left on the shelves, caskets left at the casket factory, a boot hill, old vehicles left where they quit, and much more. The only thing is that the road to bodie is not paved and can be like a washboard depending on when the last time a grader was run over it. Here is a link.

Many bookstores and visitor centers in Nat Parks have ghosttown books. Before buying check the copyright date because some o0f them are so old that they're not accurate since many ghosttowns are again active towns with people living in them. Doesn't mean they're not interesting towns, just that they're not ghosttowns anymore. I love them but DW is bored with them, sits quietly in the truck while I explore so I try not to see too many on any one trip. I go to quilt shows with her so that mollifies her a bit.
