I have wondered about the 1qt filter. It looked like it would extend down longer and be very close to the hot exhaust pipe. Any issues?

Other than simply having more oil in the engine, is there any advantage to having a bigger filter than the standard 0.5 quart? Having 0.5 to 1qt extra oil really make any difference?

For me it is an extra quart and a half of lubrication and cooling for the engine. If a leak develops somewhere, I have an extra 1 1/2 quarts of grace period before I would even get back to the factory oil level.
The 2 quart filter is easy to find and only costs a few dollars more. On my rig it is not near the exhaust pipe so that is not a problem either. It also gives me 4 times the filter capacity of the 1/2 quart filter. Basically I see zero disadvantage to using the larger filter other than the cost of a few quarts of oil.

I use NAPA gold #1794 (2qt). There has been alot of debates about filter size and their advatage. For me, the more filtering the better. MHO.

But are you really filtering more or just running the same oil through a larger sheet of the same paper. The filter itself (other than its size)is the same type of filter. It isn't filtering any cleaner just because its bigger. Oil pressure is the same so it's not moving through the engine any different. I would also think the extra oil for cooling would be negligible. I don't think 48oz of extra oil at operating temperature is not going to cool the engine any more than the original 6.5 qts. Am I wrong?

Not being critical here. Just askin'!!!

As I understand it as a filter gets dirty the oil flow is blocked. As it gets dirtyer it gets blocked more. So if their is a larger area in the filter their is more flow because of the area. I even hope I explaned this corectly

Most oil filters are designed for a certain amount of oil flow. When they get full of contaminants, they have a bypass valve that opens and allows the oil to flow past the filter element. This keeps the oil flow the same. Basically it would just take four times as long for a 2 quart filter to get full of contaminants than a 1/2 quart filter.

Do you or anyone use this filter on an 8.1L? Doing a cross reference on the Napa and Wix site on this filter does not show it for use on the 8.1.
Specs are slightly different in diameter then a 8.1 filter. I would like the extra capacity.
Thanks,
Bill

UP&DOWN:
The only reason I use the 1 qt filter is so I don't have an extra 1/2 qt of oil laying around the garage, I am not looking for nor do I suspect I will have any measureable performance gains.

BOWTIEBILL:
Currently I am using the Wix #51794. After looking at the Wix and Napa websites, The Wix 51794 and the Napa 1794 are virtually identical. They are not specifically spec'd for the 8.1 motor. However, after comparing the specs of the Wix 57099 (OEM Size and Type), other than being longer and of a slightly larger outer dimension, all these filters are usable in this application. Even the gasket dimensions are exactly the same.

I have found oemys-performance.com to be a very reliable source for a whole bunch of cross reference material (hoses, belts, filters, etc)

Thanks deblas. I thought I heard the 7.4 and 8.1 could use the same filter, but that difference in dia bothered me, along with it not being listed. I use the Wix 51794 filter on my 7.4L truck, I will do the same on my Kodiak now.
Thanks, again,
Bill
