Yeah the only thing that's holding me back from owning more watches is my Pay Grade, Oh and my Eagle and dogs take up most of my extra money, but I wouldn't trade the dogs in for noth'in. I'd sell off all of my watches if they needed the money. I'd wear the GShock, since I need a watch for work....

Never wear a watch since I retired. If I want to know the time I look at my cell phone.

I stopped wearing watches about 10 years ago. I have a clock on my cell phone to look at when away from home. When I camping I don't pay attention to the time, I am there to relax and have no schedule.

I started with a little Timex windup watch as a kid. It's my understanding it still works (my sister has it after my mom died -- my mom had put a woman's watchband on it and used it because it was so reliable).
Then I got a Waltham self winding. I loved that watch. The crystal cracked while I was in college, and the jeweler in Blacksburg VA that replaced it destroyed my watch.
Then I cobbled together some parts from a pocketwatch (that didn't work) that a friend gave me and an old pocket watch my dad had around the house that didn't work. I carried that in a watch pocket on my jeans for a couple of years with an old fob my dad had from a construction company (it was a bulldozer).
Then I got an Armitron digital watch. Cheap. Lasted for about 4 years but died when it started leaking.
I was ill when it died (a nasty cold and fever). It bothered me so bad I went to Montgomery Ward and bought a Timex they had on sale. It had both hands and digital. I went through a few batteries with it, and eventually you could not keep it sealed. When it got water in it, it would short the battery out and drain the battery in a couple of days.
So my wife bought me a nice Citizen watch from Montgomery Wards. Most expensive watch I've ever had. It had both the hands and the digital part. Forgot to take it off when we concreted in a new mailbox post. I got concrete dust in arount one of the buttons . . . then washed my hands. Never could get to the date screen on the digital after that. Last fall it was about time to get the battery replaced. It was so scratched up, I could not read the digital portion anymore and the hands were getting a little hard to see without reading glasses. I had worn out the metal band and replaced it the year before. So I asked myself . . . "do I want to spend more money on this or buy a new one?" I decided to buy a new one.
I looked at watches online for several weeks. It was a very difficult decision to make. I eventually settled on a Citizen Eco-Drive. It does not have a digital display, but does have the day of week and date in a little window at the 3 o-clock position. Some days I can read it without glasses. I don't think my wife realizes I got a new watch. I have no intention of telling her since the other one was the nicest anniversary present she ever gave me.
I like this new watch. It keeps the best time of any watch I have ever had and I don't have to replace batteries or wind it (solar powered). I also have a Danbury clock on my desk that keeps just as good time, and it is quicker to glance at here in the office. My computer is connected to a time server, so the time in the lower right hand corner is also always accurate, but it only displays to the nearest minute, much like all of the cell phones people use.
When you look around the office, you can tell I'm one of the few old school . . . I don't have a cell phone but I have a watch (if you read another thread I posted on today . . . I talk about my cell phone . . . well it is actually my wife's, service in my name, and I borrow it two weeks of the year when I am out hunting).

When I was about 5, my mom told me that when I could tell time, she would buy me a watch. (We were very poor as she was a single mom of 4 kids, no welfare. Farm people. I thought everyone ate stewed tomatoes over grits...) My grand daddy taught me to tell time and on my first day of school, I wore my new Timex watch that she gave me! It was wider than my wrist, but boy was I proud of it! I think I was the only kid, not just first grader, but in the whole elementary school, that had a watch! I still have that watch in a safe with my most valuable possessions... I would give up my rolex before I would give up that old dime store Timex!
I haven't worn a watch in probably 20 years due to getting cut on the top of my wrist and the scar is a little valley that the watch stem will always seem to find.
Great thread Pops! I will have to open the safe and look at that watch again for memories! Thanks!
Inquiring minds want to know...

I use a Casio for my everyday wear. And for special events like dinner or other special occasions, sometimes I wear my dress Seiko or Fossil.

Lance, I have to thank you as Monday, June 14, was my moms 77th birthday. The problem is that this coming August 12 will make 33 years since she past to cancer. I will be walking 60 miles in October for breast cancer as I hate any cancer!
I was really skinny back then and had one of those straps that you could use an ice pick to make the hole where it should be, cut off the extra length and run a flame across it to melt it together. I have no doubt that it was the cheapest that could be made to fit on a 6 year old skinny kid’s wrist!
Now, don't leave us hanging, lets hear about your Uncle back home!

No watch. Haven't worn one since I was in high school (long before cell phones) because I realized there's almost always a clock nearby.

Ken, very sorry to hear of your mom’s passing! But we may have kind of a coincidence thing going on here, guess when my mother’s birthday is?
She was also born on Flag Day, June 14. Ain’t that something? However, I’m fortunate and blessed that she’s still with us, as a matter of fact she was over this past weekend visiting her grandkids (well as close as she’s gonna get….to grandkids that is… ).

Lance
PS Sent you a PM regarding my uncle...I think it may be too long of a story to post here... ....Cause I still don't know how to answer a simple question with a simple answer....
PPS Sorry folks for going off topic!!! But ot keep on topic....Here's my G-Shock....

... wrong photo,... .... here it is...

For thoughs who don't like chang'in batteries or setting the time it's solar powered and automatically Syncs with the atomic clock. I think it'll even make you a cup of coffee, but I gotta read the instructions again, as well as displaying important info for folks live'in in, say, Nabraska or Kansas...the rectangular window in the center of the dial tells you if the tide is low or high....
OK, ok, you can give Pops a slap later...
