We will be leaving on our first extended trip soon with our two kids (cats) and have a couple of questions. Do most campgrounds (public or private), state parks, national parks, etc.. charge a fee for cats? If they do, how much normally? Also, when you're traveling where do you dispose of the wast? Just any trash container?

Just trying to be prepared. Thanks for any help!

We travel with our 5 cats & 1 dog. We`ve never been charged for the cats. I put their litter in used grocery bags and put it with the regular trash. Always know where your cats are at all times. It`s amazing the hiding spots they can find in a camper! Took 3 hrs once to find one of our cats.

When we took our trip to Colorado in 2002 with our cat, Bailey, we had a rule that no door was to be opened unless Bailey was secured in his cat carrier. I think it's a good plan for anyone traveling with a cat.

Some do charge a fee but not for cats as far as we know. It's aimed at the dog owners mostly. The last charge I saw was $5 a day. No mention of a charge for cats. I wouldn't stay in a CG that didn't allow cats or charged extra for them. There's no excuse to charge more for them since they don't bark or poop all over the place. People don't let them run loose to pester or terrorize the other campers. The used litter goes in a trashbag and is put in the dumpsters.

It's an excellent idea. We've seen lost cats in several CGs. Sadly, they're just left to die, wandering around, looking for their departed owners. When we were camping at Lebanon State Park with our camping club some kids found a beautiful friendly calico cat. One of the men camping with the group took her and still has her. The children went around the whole park trying to find her owners. Nada. She was one of the lucky ones.

Our new camper has a slide-out and I'm a little paranoid about it. They wont be loose when it's moved in or out but I can't tell if they can get into the mechanism. It's under the sofa and behind a board but I can see the chain and cables in front of the board. I don't know what exactly is behind that board. If it's something they can get caught or trapped in.

WandaLust,
Do a search on "RV Pet Stop" specifically concerning the slide outs. Lots of good info here which will help you out. Basically you want to block their access to any areas they can access where they could be hurt, or where you can't get them out.

Oh, when we open the doors, our cats run the other direction. They are afraid of the out doors. And to think that they started life out as barn cats. It is amazing what time will do! 9 years later and they want nothing to do with the outside. Guess that they know how well they have it made.

I have been traveling with my cat for 11 years now and they are smart and learn not to jump out after a time or two. Mine waits for the door to open and then looks to see where she is at then usually returns to her lair unless she happens to be home then she gets out. She is now 14 years old leash trained and remembers some of the parks we go to and will lead me to the trails. and sometimes back to the spot we had last year. Jerry
