Fueling up our gasser is still my biggest worry. We can drive 6-7 hours on 3/4 tank of gas, thats when we find a camp ground,Unhook the toad, and go out to dinner. while out in the area we scout all the gas stations. In the the morning we head right for the station we picked the night before. I have found that Pilot truck stops are a place to stay away from. All seem to have the same dumb design, which makes it very difficult to get a class A in and out. On the left is a fence or parking rail to keep you out of the truck area(not enough room to turn around. On the right is a parking lot(usually full),again no room to turn around.

Like many others, I usually start watching for place to stop at about 1/2 tank, and look for either a location where the pumps are parallel to the front of the store, or a Flying-J with RV pumps. My absolute last choice is a gas station with pumps perpendicular to the store front, and then only if I really need gas, and I'm sure I can get in and out without risking the RV and other customers.

I have never seen any gas pumps at any of the Trucker lanes we've been at since we started RVing. Our previous coach was 34 foot gas - it is much easier to find fuel now that we are in a diesel coach because we do have the option of using trucker lanes. I hadn't thought about it before but is something I would have to consider if we ever (not likely) decided to go back to a 36/38 foot gas coach.

My tank fill is at the rear of the coach which really complicates the issue. Consequently, I use the rv pumps at Flying J whenever they are available.

In our travels you can't always depend on your next exit book to really be sure that a station that is designated as RV friendly is really RV friendly. If you are diesel, okay. But gas, not always dependable. We take exit ramp and look and if we feel we can get out of station then we pull in. We also are looking for gas when tank is down to half. And yes we pull a jeep. Isn't it fun. Always be aware of overhangs that they are not short. We found a Phillips 66 in if I remember correctly in Rockport,Wy and had to go around building because overhang was 12'6" and we are 12'10". So back out onto street and down to another station. Have safe travels.

Not meaning to hijack the OP's question here, but the height comment was made before I had the chance to ask - don't you all have to worry about the same thing that 5th wheel do - not only turning radius but the height of the gas station canopy?

I (Sally) am going to ask what I am sure to all of you is a stupid question. So here goes. Do all stations have diesel pumps? We were thinking gas Class A (mostly me) as I worried about getting Diesel everywhere we travel. Perhaps my inexperience has made this a non issue. Will be traveling in both Canada and US.

The short answer is no - for example the Sam's Clubs near us do not sell diesel. The Circle K on the corner by us does not sell diesel and the BP a couple of miles away also does not sell diesel. However, the Kroger behind the BP does.
At most freeway exits, there is probably at least one station that sells diesel, but question is can you get into it expecially with a toad?
If this topic started out with a gas Class A in mind, then as a former gasser owner I could usually fit into most stations, but still had to plan the entry and exit. As a longer diesel owner that effort has to be re-doubled. I have noticed that most stations that sell diesel make it available on the outside pumps because they realize that the trucks and RVs that need diesel are bigger and need more room. Still I don't always fit and have driven off without filling when there was no good way to get to the pumps.
Usually on long trips I fuel up at Flying Js but sometimes even their RV pumps require a sharp turn to get out you might even have to wait for a car to move from a parking place.

Hi All.
A little off subject for a minute. When we had our 5er and our PSD. We never had any real issues of finding Diesel. Of coarse, we also carried two extra 6 1/2 gallon Diesle Cans. Mostly for trips to the unkown area's. Now, as far as our Gasser Motorhome goes. We too, also start to look for gas at a 1/2 a tank. That way it gives you plenty of time to pick and chose your gas station with out worring if your low on gas or not. Besides, about every 2 hours or so, I need to get out an move around, due to medical issues. I try and do a fill up if at all possible. But at 1/2 a tank, its just about time to get out and streach the legs and to make a pit stop anyways. We would much rather pick the gas station that we chose, rather than be forced to one that is not so good. Plannning ahead makes all the differance in the world. For an emergency. We do carry a 6 1/2 gallong Gas can, just in case we should ever run into a situation that we just can't get into a gas staion, even with out the toad. It might be a slow way to fill up, but its better than nothing. So far, we have never had to do this. But we need the gas can anyways, as we need gas for our Twin Honda's. Good Luck. Happy Travels. Excellent advise, this way you'll never place youself in a bad situation and will have the ability to seek out the right fueling station that would best suit your needs.
