Considering trip from SC to Niagara Falls and then on to Maine. Anyone have any suggestions about how to do this? This will be our first loooooog trip - our longest so far has been to Savannah - St Augustine - Cedar Key, Fla. Good trip considering that one slide had the epizoolics. Now if I can just get that #$%^& clearance light working, we'll be good to go!

I can't speak to the SC to Niagara Falls portion of your trip, however, in 2005 we drove from Maine to Niagara Falls. South from Maine to I90 and then West. I90 was the worst! In all our travels it was the only highway we got rock chips on the front of our TT. And, the tolls! Whew! I would take some other route next time.
Our RV is our home for nealy eight years.
I think I finally qualify as a full-timer.

I don't deadhead much anymore. But from Columbia to the Falls, I'd take I-77 up to Beckley, WV and pickup the "Mountaineer Expressway", Hwy 19. It's a 4 lane expressway that passes through a few small towns with a few stop lights. Mostly 65 mph, but watch your speed in the towns. That will take you to I-79. Take it north to Erie, PA and I-90, then east to Buffalo and the Falls. A couple of long 7 hour days will get you there. Clarksburg, WV will just about be your half-way point. Many RVers find the Wally World right off the Interstate there for some rest.
From Buffalo to Maine, you'll find the I-90 East to be the quickest but expensive. NY is proud of it's toll toads.
On edit: I meant to precede my post with a "howdy neighbor" as I'm parked just up the road in Rock Hill for a few weeks. I've traveled that route from Charlotte to the NF area in all seasons, 4 or 5 times a year for the past 6 yrs. If you want to break the trip up into shorter days, I may have some suggestions. Feel free to PM me.

I guess it all depends on how many days you want to take to get from SC to NF, and also how much hill climbing you're good for.
The most direct route takes you through Winston-Salem then along 77 through WV and VA - the half way point of a two day trip would be around Wythville, VA or maybe Beckley.
If you want something a less less mountainous then Mapquest for directions from SC to NF with Gettysburg as a via point - that route is about four or five hours longer.
Going from NF to Maine, the most most direct route is the I-90 etc., although if time is not an issue, and depending on your destination in Maine, you could up and over through Canada past Toronto and Montreal.
Some of the roads in Quebec can rival the bad stretches on the I-90, though.

Stop by the "Grand Canyon" of the East, located in Letchworth State Park, in NE NY. Here is a picture of one of the many falls. The little specs at the top are people, to give you some idea of the size. There are several water falls, RV parks in the area, and it is a great place to spend the day.

You might want to stop in Lockport, NY and take a cruise on the Erie Canal which is still a functioning canal and a very important one in the history of commerce.

If you kind of point north from Winston-Salem, or Danville VA, you get onto a nice 4 lane road that points you north. It runs along through Harrisonburg and Altoona, goes up through NY state through Ellicotville and Hamburg NY on Rte 219. it's a nice drive. I timed it once from Danville to my house in Hamilton Ontario, it was 4 hours longer than taking I77/79, but was 40 miles shorter...
Buffalo NY is right next to Niagara Falls, and from there you can take surface roads all the way to Maine, or just take the toll road. It's not that expensive in the greater scheme of things.

We have alway wanted to go to NF, as an extra venture on one of our race trips to Ohio, but was told theres no room to park a M/H at the falls & they say the best view is on the Canada side.
I'm thinking just like already mentioned, the I-85 to I-77 north to I-90 would be your best route, kinda hilly but 4 lane except for the construction zones.
If you have an F-53, be ready for the ruff ride up & then back down on I-77 in Wva, we were up to Ohio last week & it must be untrained monkeys doing the construction patching work & putting in speed JUMPs instead of smoothing it out.
So ruff it cut my gen off 5 times before we got off the WVA T/P comming back home.
