We came that way in a 45' w/toad without any problems. If you have the time, take a side trip at Tehachapi to see the Tehachapi Loop. If you like trains or like to see an awesome engineering feat, this is a must see. Here's a link....Tehachapi Loop...We stopped and took the toad and enjoyed it a lot. Trains come by about every 30mins or so......Dennis

Good route, but don't plan on buying fuel in Needles. MUCH better prices in AZ about 8 miles in at Lake Havasu exit.

You don't go thru Needles on the way to Las Vegas from the Bay Area.
But you are right about the fuel prices in Needles versus across the river in Arizona. Like fifty cents a gallon difference. LOL

I drive from the SF Bay area twice a year to Las Vegas. I take I-5 south to Lost Hills. (There is a good truck wash there that will do a great job on your RV cheap!) Then take CA 46 through Wasco to US 99 to Bakersfield. Then catch hwy 58. Like the above post I stay at Orange Grove RV Park right off Hwy 58. Great camp ground! $35 per night for GS, AAA, AARP. (And yes you can pick oranges off the trees in season.) Then it is over the Tehachapi pass to Barstow and up I- 15 to Las Vegas! I love to travel this way. Nice road, lots of scenery. It can get windy out there up on the flats but not too bad. I would never go south to LA and then over! Try it and me know what you think.
This is the better route in that you cross over to Hwy 99 by using Hwy 46 rather than Hwy 58 Hyw 58 has a number of traffic lights as you enter Bakersfield. Using Hwy 46 there are only a couple of lights in Wasco. Also less traffic on Hwy 46.

As a highschooler, I picked those oranges a box at a time as the property that is now the Campground was a farm owned by a 2nd cousin of my mom. They are great oranges! I grew up at Hwy 58 and Enos Lane west of town and then we moved South of town past Greenfield.

If you take the Hwy 46 connection over to Hwy 99, there is a FJ on Hwy 99 just south of where you will get onto Hwy 99 should you need fuel.

Have a good trip.

You are correct. I drive both routes on a regular basis and I had just read about someone going to Flagstaff from Oregon. This is scary stuff, my first "senior moment".

And if you can at all avoid it, do not leave Las Vegas on a Sunday (at least south).

I drive this route several times a year and came up with an alternative after becoming frustrated with the amount of traffic on I-5. I use 101 south to Paso Robles, then take 46 east to 99. It's more scenic and less traffic. It is a little longer, requiring more time.
