Hi,
I am planning a trip in October to drive from the SF bay area to Las Vegas. I am looking at driving on hwy 58 from hwy 5 to 15.
I have a class A 39 feet. Has anybody made this trip, any issues?
Thanks, Steve

You will have no trouble as it is a state hwy with a combination of 4 lane and wide 2 lanes. There are a couple of climbs and decents through the Tehachapi area but nothing too severe. Depending on the time of day traffic can back up at Kramer Junction where it crosses Hwy 395. I-15 is much worse on a Friday evening than anything you will encounter on 58. Enjoy ther trip and stay away from the 6/5 blackjack tables.

I drove that route last spring from CO to Pebble Beach for the PB Pro AM. It was a nice road. Bakersfield had a nice RV Park set in an Orange Grove where you can pick oranges off the trees. We don't get that opportunity here in CO.
Enjoy the trip -- Frank O.

We're in Pleasanton and made that trip many times. We usualy make it a two day trip with the first day ending at the Orange Grove in Bakersfield, then on to LV. Never had a problem.

I drive from the SF Bay area twice a year to Las Vegas. I take I-5 south to Lost Hills. (There is a good truck wash there that will do a great job on your RV cheap!) Then take CA 46 through Wasco to US 99 to Bakersfield. Then catch hwy 58. Like the above post I stay at Orange Grove RV Park right off Hwy 58. Great camp ground! $35 per night for GS, AAA, AARP. (And yes you can pick oranges off the trees in season.) Then it is over the Tehachapi pass to Barstow and up I- 15 to Las Vegas! I love to travel this way. Nice road, lots of scenery. It can get windy out there up on the flats but not too bad. I would never go south to LA and then over! Try it and me know what you think.

Good road all the way. You can drive I-5 or 99, they are both good roads. I-5 can get kind of boring at times since it is straight as an arrow. And highway 58 from Mojave to Barstow has some stretches of road that are two lane. They will not allow the state to widen it because they are protecting the desert tortoises, so those two lane stretches in my opinion are dangerous because of on coming traffic. All it takes is somebody in a hurry trying to pass when they shouldn't. So you have to be on your toes while in those two lane sections. I-15 from Barstow to Las Vegas is a very good road. I am in Las Vegas at the moment, will be leaving Monday.

Went that way last May from Fresno. Did a road condition check in the morning before we left, as I always do, and discovered 58 was closed indefinitly at Tehachapi due to a runaway wind generator.
It turns out one of those big wind turbines that was close to 58 had lost control and was spinning extremely fast. The part that was supposed to prevent that had failed and they had 50 mpg winds in the area. They were afraid the blade was going to come apart near the highway and hit a car so they closed the road.
We drove on up there and by the time we got there the wind had died down and they were able to secure the blades and opened the highway.
Every trip is an adventure.

Frequent traveler on 58 and another big shout for the Orange Grove RV Park. You'll never find oranges as good as the ones they offer for you to pick, in any grocery.
