Guys & Gals;
Were heading south for a month or so in mid sept. Hoping to find a good
destination camp spot on or at the beach in Florida. Destin or other.
Any recommendations welcome.

We have always skipped by costly Destin and went a little further west to Navarre Beach which have at least three to choose from and stayed at these two...

Try Saint Joe Peninsula State Park Located on the Gulf and the Bay on Cape San Blas Road located between Port St Joe and Apalachicola Florida. You'll really like this park.

Little expensive but great beach sites or just off the beach full hookups. The beach sites have no sewers and no pets allowed on the beach sites.

We stayed there last weekend. If you stay just off the beach (we were one row back), the rates are more affordable and, as noted, you get sewer hookups. After September 7, the winter rates go into effect and the prices drop quite a bit.

Are you sure about that? I always thought the winter rates in Florida went up and not down...

South Florida maybe. Destin is north Florida. From the campground's website:

SUMMER RATES: 5/27/10 thru 9/6/10

BEACH FRONT** $155.00
BEACH SITES $112.00
UPPER PARK SITES $ 92.00

WINTER RATES: 9/7/10 thru 2/14/11

BEACH FRONT ** $ 89.00
BEACH SITES $ 79.00
UPPER PARK SITES $ 69.00

SPRING RATES: 2/15/11 thru 5/25/11

BEACH FRONT** $155.00
BEACH SITES $112.00
UPPER PARK SITES $ 92.00

We've stayed at the Navarre Beach Campground, and it is very nice. It borders the Santa Rosa Sound, though, not the Gulf of Mexico, and so is not really on a "beach" as such.

We've done the St Andrews state park Panama City. Beach is fantastic. There is a sheltered area behind a long rock jetty that is great for kids. Plenty of fish, marine life in the sheltered area. Puffers, crabs, all sorts of marine life. No waves and sand on one side makes it suitable for toddlers and younger kids. Bring snorkle fins and floats. Opposite that there is a very good oceanfront beach. There are concessions, etc. The campground is on the rock jetty side and is almost within walking distance. The state campground itself is just ok, with limited facilities. Google St Andrews rock jetty and search "images".

Well yes, come to think of it but there isn't a lot of difference except for sighting land in the distance. If I remember correctly, there was enough sand there for a beach, too.

If Florida is just a general direction rather than the destination, you should also look at Gulf State Park between Gulf Shores, AL and Orange Beach, AL. It has almost 500 sites, all with full services as well as new recreational facilities. The park owns a lot of the beach in that part of Alabama. The park entrance is 5 or 6 miles from the Florida border. We're heading back there this October.

Not to get into a p*****g match, but if you expect a "beach" to have: 150 feet of sand between any buildings and the water; miles of uninterrupted walking on the beach; waves; girls in bikinis; and a sandy bottom under the water instead of muck, you'll be disappointed with the so-called "beach" at the Navarre Beach campground. However, the view out over the water is great; there are nice beaches within a short drive; and the campground itself is one of the nicer ones I've been to. It's also a lot cheaper than staying right on the beach at Destin. You pays your money and you makes your choice. . . .

Can't argue with all of that and don't think we even went in the water there. We have some of the most pristine beaches in the world right here where we live, so for us, it was just a stop over heading west to the Pacific coast and I wasn't about to pay Destin prices.

If you are active duty or retired military or DOD, Oak Grove RV park at Pensacola Naval Air Station is a great place to stay, about 100 yards from the beach.
